Every now and then, I truly enjoy reading a non-fiction book - especially a memoir or biography. With Postcards from Lonnie, I got a bit of both since Lisa Johnson writes the story of her relationship with her brother and her brother's postcards depicting his life are added into her work.

Postcards was truly an emotional read which Johnson navigated masterfully. It was touching while giving its readers the truth in Lonnie's life experiences. There were moments of deep feeling that were expertly balanced with moments of real life and its annoyances. There were so many unfolding emotions expressed in Johnson's work that it only encouraged me to keep reading. And what I truly appreciated was the honesty of Lonnie's experience with homelessness and alcoholism. I believe that it gave the homeless population a voice by using the voice of Lonnie with his background. The mix of Lonnie's reality with homelessness and alcoholism was truly a humbling experience to partake in.

A read like Postcards from Lonnie could have come off as too much of an overwhelming read. Johnson, however, was able to balance the emotions and understanding of her brother to create a "story" that intrigues reader instead of alienating them. Anyone interested in taking a look into the lives of others would surely enjoy Postcards with Lonnie. It will pull at your heartstrings just as it did mine.

I must admit - I felt I was a bit out of my element when I chose to review Amanda Cabot's Out of the Embers. I wasn't one of those kids that got to read Little House on the Prairie and I read Anne of Green Gables as an adult (I did love it!). These are the examples I have of small town country life. But I am definitely open-minded enough to try a genre/sub genre I haven't explored before.

One of the first things I appreciated from Out of the Embers was the attention to detail regarding the surroundings. The scenery of Mesquite Springs was rich and the perfect backdrop for the story. I found Evelyn Radcliffe and and her companion Polly to be sweet characters to accompany. I enjoy stories of new beginnings growing out of hardship - and that is most definitely what happened to both Evelyn and Polly. There was a hearty mix of new beginnings, hardship, love and mystery.

I believe that Out of the Embers is a wonderful beginning to a brilliant series. Something I want to make sure readers know is that this book reads the way a train travels - it is consistent and steady. There are no drastic turns and flips - when you read this book, you read to enjoy the scenery. And enjoy it you surely will.

Excerpt:
A cross from Italy’s mainland sat the city of Messina like an indomitable fortress. Proud of its solid presence, Messina was the travelers’ first encounter with the island of Sicily. The earthy colors of the buildings and landscape signaled to the visitor or returning Sicilian that Messina and its people belonged to the island, not to any outside political force or cultural tradition. The clang of the donkey-drawn carts and the voices calling out to customers to buy wares in the market added to the music of the city’s sounds. Visitors marveled out loud at the cathedrals and ancient art work throughout the city, but the locals walked and spoke softly, especially near the narrow slits between the buildings. Visitors delighted in the snake-like movement of the streets. The streets seemed to lead directly to a famous church or street market but then would slowly veer off in a different direction. They seemed to be designed to intentionally confuse. The city offered no help in arriving at a specific destination. Ancient buildings were so close together that air barely squeezed through. Residents believed that between the buildings old mysteries sat, holding the true essence of Messina.  Whenever one of the townspeople walked close to the openings, there seemed to be a whisper, not a sound you could hear with your physical ears but heard in your mind. The whisper seemed to convey a yearning that had been imprisoned for hundreds of years. When this happened, people scurried past, heads down, attempting to get away from the whispers in their heads.
Angela ran down the hot cobblestone street and fell, scrambled to her feet and ran, then fell again. She threw herself on the street and screamed a long scream that echoed off the ruins of the ancient churches. A timeless scream that would always and forever be heard. Her city, Messina, was a massive graveyard. She searched for her family—her mother, sister and brother. She yelled their names into the air, into demolished houses. She screamed at bodies crushed or run through by fallen beams. Other bodies were caught between the open earth and the street. They were the souls in hell that she had seen in paintings, forever in agony, never at peace.

Hello readers!

<<Okay all - this is the third time I write my review - I have no idea how it keeps getting deleted! Here we go again! >>

So, I was apprehensive at first in reading an action/thriller book that I thought wouldn't be going too "dark" or have no traces of horror or gore. I am a huge horror fan, and I tend to gravitate to novels in which I see those elements reflected. Thankfully, I had nothing to worry about because in lieu of horror and gore, I got a well-rounded, detailed, and thrilling story by James R. Hannibal. No chance of long-winded and drawn out scenes here. Each scene is written with purpose and is highly enjoyable.

What really did me in, however, was Talia's character. I am definitely a character-driven reader, and Talia has all the qualities I love in my female characters. She is so intelligent, badass, and clever. What's even better, is that Hannibal also made her hard-working, and forgiving. It can be difficult sometimes to have all these traits co-mingle in a character. It can be annoyingly contradicting. This is not the case with Talia. She is able to be herself and still remain part of a group - a team.

Chasing the White Lion is definitely a book worth picking up. It will satisfy your action needs while also allowing you to feast on a great story. Talia is an incredible character and definitely worth getting to know.
