I never thought about it when I was younger, but it's very true that, at some point in your schooling, you will learn a bit more than the usual about the Battle of the Alamo as a Texas student. It can be very easy to have names and events blend and blur together when you are a young student.
But no worries if you're not a Texan or if your memory is lacking (like mine!), Max L. Knight has done a fantastic job portraying much of that battle, including what led up to it and the aftermath, in his newest historical fiction book, Ghostly Bugles. By using the mysterious character of The Old Man, Knight gives us an understanding of what was during that time of the Battle of the Alamo. He does so by portraying visions and dreams The Old Man has - which in itself is a great way of portraying the emotions of the time to the reader.
Ghostly Bugles is very well researched and it is clear that Knight knows what he's talking about. He's also able to "show" the reader the workings of history through this fictional character - it's truly a great way to learn and gain curiosity about history!
This book is definitely a must read for history buffs, but specifically - Texas history-buffs. The writing is detailed and grabs your attention until the very last page.

Talk about a book that is truly a glimpse of an Orwellian future.

In Blue Running, we meet young Bluebonnet, Blue for short, and the Texas she lives in. This Texas has separated itself from the rest of the nation. Everyone fourteen and older is required to carry a firearm. Blue is fourteen and unhappy with what she sees in her life. It's a coming of age story, if that story included consequences for not having a gun in your pocket. Seemingly everything is controlled. Controlled or too expensive for someone as poor as Blue to own.

Just as Stephens offers the vernacular in her writing to reflect that of a young Texan, the narrator, Ashley Rose Kaplan, does the same in the inflections in her voice. Her narrating style truly brings out the character of Blue and the background of a dystopian Texas.

Stephens' writing reflects much of what is happening right now with Texas politics and the horrifying ordeals we've had to witness over the years - ever increasing with each passing day it seems. Some might see the benefits in the would-be future described in Blue Running, but I see a lesson. I see a would-be horror story with no end. Stephens does a wonderful job in making the reader think and hearing this all narrated adds a special punch to the story. Truly not a story for the weak at heart. Readers should expect suspense and thrills - and inevitable urge to think. Think think think.

Wow - talk about a way to start off a new series! Survival  by Lisa Harris is a fast-paced journey in a world that could very well be our actual future, as terrifying as that may seem. The story takes place in Shadow Ridge, Texas and it centers around Jace and Levi who are visiting their parents. There is a complete electricity and tech black-out in their town and everyone in it is having to learn to fend for themselves the best way they can. As if that wasn't hard enough, there are a group of raiders that are threatening that very delicate balance of existence for the town.

Survival reflects a possible dystopian outcome for our world in a very realistic way. Harris does a fantastic job of basically scaring me (haha), but also providing all readers with a bountiful look at these characters who are living in this impossible situation. I found the story to always be filled with something - action, anxieties, hardships, and still throughout, hopefulness and love. The story never felt like it was getting tiring. The writing grabbed my attention from the get-go, and it is definitely a great build up to a continuing series. I'm looking forward to future additions!

I had such a great time reading and enjoying The Aquamarine Surfboard by Kellye Abernathy. The description of life by the beach was brought to life by Abernathy's descriptions. There was something homey about it while at the same time feeling other-worldly.

Condi, the 13 year old girl at the center of the story, was lovely to read about. Her circumstances as well as her determination and eagerness created a well-rounded character that readers of all ages could definitely enjoy and cheer for. Thirteen is such an important age. It is an age where we are not necessarily a child, but also not necessarily a teenager either. I feel that The Aquamarine Surfboard shows the reader the juxtaposition of the in-between time where the magic of childhood hasn't completely diminished as we edge toward the blossoming of getting older.

There is a whole other level to this story that involves the Beachlings, a group of local women, that certainly gives more weight to this story. It shows us Condi's struggles with how her community is changing and the underlying stories beneath the surface of the town and Condi's life. Due to this level of complexity, I see older middle grade readers as well as young adults (and adults, of course) enjoying this story.

There are truly layers to this story, and I believe that Abernathy did a wonderful job in relaying this lovely story to readers. From the magic of living near the water, the eagerness of growing up to the complexity of community - it is all engrossing and results into quite the page-turner. This is definitely a book that needs to be on your list!
