A small-town Texas Christmas story, where hearts are lost, love is found, and family always brings you back home.
Griffin Holloway is desperate: the Maverick Ranch has been in his family for generations, but lately, it’s a money pit. He’d sooner marry one of his horses than sell the ranch. Marriage, though, could be a solution. If he can woo a wealthy bride, he might save the ranch—just in time for Christmas. Jaxon O’Grady likes his solitude just fine, thank you very much. But when a car accident brings the unexpected to his door, he realizes just how much one person can need another. Crossroads is the perfect place for Jamie Johnson: avoiding nosy questions about why she’s single, she’s happy to keep to her lakeside home. So she’s baffled when she gets the strangest Christmas present of all, in the form of a Mr. Johnson, asleep on her sofa. Who is he, and why does everyone think he’s her husband?
In this uplifting novel, three unlikely couples discover just what Crossroads, Texas, can offer: romance, belonging, and plenty of Christmas spirit.
”Deeply poignant moments and artfully rendered characters create a rich story that transports readers to an idyllic place.” – Publishers Weekly

A fifth-generation Texan, New York Times and USA TODAY bestselling author Jodi Thomas chooses to set the majority of her novels in her home state, where her grandmother was born in a covered wagon. A former teacher, Thomas traces the beginning of her storytelling career to the days when her twin sisters were young and impressionable.
With a degree in family studies, Thomas is a marriage and family counselor by education, a background that enables her to write about family dynamics. Honored in 2002 as a Distinguished Alumni by Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Thomas enjoys interacting with students on the West Texas A&M University campus, where she currently serves as Writer in Residence.
Commenting on her contribution to the arts, Thomas said, “When I was teaching classes full-time, I thought I was making the world a better place. Now I think of a teacher or nurse or mother settling back and relaxing with one of my books. I want to take her away on an adventure that will entertain her. Maybe, in a small way, I’m still making the world a better place.”
When not working on a novel or inspiring students to pursue a writing career, Thomas enjoys traveling with her husband, renovating a historic home they bought in Amarillo and checking up on their two grown sons.

To be honest, I am mostly focused on stories of horror at this time of year because it truly is my most favorite time of year. I couldn't pass up an opportunity to review a book of Christmas romance stories, however. They are my second most favorite thing to read during this part of the year as well!

And I was not disappointed. Jodi Thomas has truly assembled three stories of love and hope. Each story, whether it was about ranchers trying to save the family ranch, a school teacher helping a stranger, or the connection between man and dog, each have a similar thread woven between them: love. These characters are examples of the hope we need in our everyday lives, but that become most apparent during the Christmas/winter months. Each story has a lasting feeling of love that will keep the reader warm throughout the year, not just at Christmas time.

I recommend this read to anyone who might feel a bit blue during the winter months, and could use a reminder of hope. I recommend this read to all readers who would like a some sunshine during the darker days.

A Tall, Dark Cowboy Christmas
by Maisey Yates

Synopsis

It’s Christmas in Gold Valley, and this wounded widower is about to get another shot at love…

Grant Dodge didn’t expect to find a woman sleeping in an abandoned cabin on his family ranch. Or to find her so intriguing. Unlike every other woman in town, McKenna Tate doesn’t know Grant’s a widower. There’s no pity in the looks she gives him. McKenna wants him, and Grant has forgotten what it’s like to feel like a man. A no-strings fling for Christmas might be the kind of holiday cheer Grant needs…

With only a suitcase to her name, McKenna came to Gold Valley to confront her birth father. She didn’t plan to work at the Dodge ranch or fall for the gorgeous cowboy who keeps his heart roped off. But there’s no denying the way their broken pieces fit together. Hope brought her to Gold Valley—but will it be the gift that could finally heal Grant, and McKenna’s own wounded heart?

Also includes a bonus Gold Valley novella, Snowed in with the Cowboy!

Review

Let me say - I don't usually read cowboy stories, much less Christmas cowboy stories (I'm in Halloween mode at the moment). They just aren't a my "type". So, that's why I jumped at the chance to review this latest book by Maisey Yates.

We meet Mckenna Tate who is looking for her biological dad after years of not having any family. She finds herself sleeping in an abandoned cabin in Gold Valley. We also meet Grant Dodge, a broken man who is still feeling the aftermath of losing his wife years before. He is surprised to come to the family ranch to find a woman, ahem-Mckenna, sleeping soundly. It doesn't take long for the attraction between them to grow.

I truly loved the character of Mckenna - so vulnerable, but yet so strong. I love that juxtaposition in my characters. She is a prime example that you can be "soft" while also taking care of yourself. And, as sad as the stories of both Mckenna and Grant are, there is this underlying feeling of hope that runs through. I appreciated that amongst the angst in order for the story to not feel so bleak.

I recommend this book to lovers of romance, but also, anyone willing to try a love story with a bit of Christmas sprinkled in.

Interview with Author Margaret Brownley

Where did you first get the idea Cowboy Charm School?
I played with the idea for four or five years before I actually got around to writing the book.  Book ideas generally come to me in scenes.  I’ll suddenly visualize someone atop a runaway stagecoach or scrambling over a roof and then have to figure out who and why. The scene that popped into my head for Cowboy Charm School was a wedding scene with a man running down the church aisle yelling, “Stop the Wedding!”

It took me awhile to figure out that the man was a Texas Ranger who thinks he’s saving the bride from marrying an outlaw. He’s mistaken, of course, but his accusations cause the couple to break up.  It’s only right that he tries to get the estranged couple back together and that’s when it starts to get complicated.

How long have you been writing?
It feels like I’ve been writing all my life.  As a child, when anyone gave me money, I would always buy one thing; a notebook.  I wrote my first “book” in fifth grade.  It was thirty pages long and, to a ten-year-old, that qualified as a book.  It was a mystery involving stolen macaroons.

What was the hardest part of writing this book?
Every book offers its own challenges, and Cowboy Charm School was no different.  After writing more than 50 books, the biggest challenge for me is keeping my stories fresh and each couples’ story unique.

What did you enjoy most about writing?
I think what I enjoy most about writing is discovery.  As I learn about my characters, I also learn about myself.   A former agent once pointed out that one of the themes that runs through my books is abandonment.  Until she brought that to my attention, I hadn’t known I had abandonment issues. Never underestimate the power of the subconscious.

Did you first experience rejections when submitting this manuscript for publication?
No rejections on this one but, boy, did I ever pile them up on other books.  My first historical pulled in more than seventeen rejections. It finally sold and helped launch a publisher’s new line. That meant lots of publicity and perks. Had the first seventeen publishers not rejected my story, I would have missed out on a great opportunity.

From this experience I learned a valuable lesson; a rejection is not the end of the story.  Sometimes it simply means there’s something better out there.

How important are names to you in your books? How do you choose names?
Since I write books set in the Old West it’s important that names reflect the times.  A name also has to say something about the character and carry the tone of the book. After picking a name, I check the census for the year my character was born to see if the name existed back then.
For my heroes, I look for strong masculine names.  This means choosing names with hard consonant sounds like Garrett, Rhett or Hunter. I’ll also work in a soft consonant, usually in his last name.  That tells the reader that no matter how arrogant or difficult the hero is, he has a vulnerable spot that the heroine will eventually uncover

What is your favorite quote?
I recently came across a quote by Ram Dass that touched my heart.  “We’re all just walking each other home.”   That’s something to think about.

Stunning beauty and amateur cellist Marie Donovan finds herself in deep trouble after her pro-quarterback husband dives off a Dallas high rise—many say in shame after his shady investments go sour. Just months later, the grieving Marie faces capital murder charges for the death of a lecherous opera maestro. When hard evidence points squarely at her, only her best friend and defense lawyer believe her.
Marie is no stranger to struggle. During her six years as an NFL Football wife, she fends off groupies eager to take her man, all the while feeling lost in her husband’s macho culture. Studying the cello becomes Marie’s solace until her hard-drinking husband retires after an injury. Returning to Dallas, he plays with high society's money in an investment scheme until winning at all costs leaves Marie and her twin sons on the hook for millions.
Scorned by society friends, charged with murder, Marie pins her hopes on hunky defense lawyer Ryan Ingles, one of Cole's college football pals. After Ryan’s legal team discovers some of the maestro’s dark secrets, Marie and Ryan’s investigative troupe travel to exotic islands in search of clues Cole left behind. As the tropics weave a romantic spell, a corrupt offshore banker dashes Marie's hopes. She wonders if she’ll ever be free of blame...and able to claim her own place in this world.

Heart broken by betrayal, Dr. Samantha Fowler finds herself starting over at thirty-three. He’s not done.
Quarry in site, he watches and waits. “I am the master. I cannot be stopped.”

Whispers On The Wind â€‹ticked off a lot of boxes for me. There was a bit of everything I enjoy in my books. There was a loyal dog with quite the personality, a mystery with more eeriness than most mysteries I'm used to, and a sizzling developing love story between our two main characters. I was expecting the creepiness factor - but I definitely did not expect to find a love story within these pages!

The story that unwinds is captivating as much for its suspense as it is for the attraction between Sam and Coop. I love love stories between people who would rather not fall in love. But their attraction to each other is undeniable and captivating from the first moment they see each other. The author also did a fantastic job building the suspense surrounding the murders that are taking place around this quaint town.

We're edging toward the end of summer, and I can't think of a better way of spending it than with a book that both sizzles and gives you chills. Isn't that the kind of book summers are for anyway? Or is that just me? If you enjoy mysteries and/or suspenseful romance - this is definitely a book worth checking out!
