Gated 3
by Matt Drabble

Synopsis

It’s time for the multi award winning trilogy to come to an end, but will anyone be left standing.

It was the chance of a lifetime for Avery Grant, the opportunity to run an election campaign for a candidate that seemed like the real deal.

Christian Tolanson has risen through the ranks of British politics. A man with a unique ability to inspire those around him to almost cult like levels of devotion. He has lived many lives down through the ages from his humble beginnings as a child preacher. But now his life force is finally starting to fade and time is running out pushing him to desperate levels. A man consumed by his own destiny and ready to burn the world to get what he wants.

Avery will discover the path that many have walked before her and never returned from. A realisation that anything that seems too good to be true, will likely get you killed.

Review

I have already reviewed so many of Drabble's works that I've honestly lost count - in a good way! His works are full of thrills and horror fun, and this book is no different. If anything, it's probably a bit more poignant due to the theme running in with election time. But it is exactly because of that fact that I think readers will take something extra from Gated 3. Seeing two sides of the coin, a hopeful onlooker/supporter, and a man who is used to leading and getting what he wants, no matter the cost - that is what you are getting into with this book. For fans of thrillers, this is definitely a book you need to try out.

And if you haven't already read other stuff by Matt Drabble - what are you waiting for!?

Raven's Peak
by Lincoln Cole

Synopsis

A quiet little mountain town is hiding a big problem. When the townsfolk of Raven's Peak start acting crazy, Abigail Dressler is called upon to find out what is happening. She uncovers a demonic threat unlike any she's ever faced and finds herself in a fight just to stay alive.

She rescues Haatim Arison from a terrifying fate and discovers that he has a family legacy in the supernatural that he knows nothing about. Now she's forced to protect him, which is easy, and also trust him if she wants to save the townsfolk of Raven's Peak. Trust, however, is considerably more difficult for someone who grew up living on the knife's edge of danger.

Can they discover the cause of the town's insanity and put a stop to it before it is too late?

Review

If you're a frequent reader of this blog, first of all: Thank you! And second of all, you know how much I love character development. Raven's Peak has at its center two well-written and complex characters, Abigail and Haatim. Horror/thriller/supernatural stories already have my attention, but what makes this story stand out are the aforementioned characters and their progression through the story, as well as the backdrop of another world being at the basis of the one Haatim thought he understood.

Abigail is a demon hunter and Haatim becomes a sidekick of sorts. The story is fast-paced, and grabs the reader from the get-go. I found myself really enjoying the character of Abigail because her kickass ways reminded me of the Buffy and Faith days. Ah, nostalgia.

Anyone interested in a horror/thriller that has its twists and turns with a female at the front of it all will definitely enjoy this book!

Psychopomp and Circumstance
by Adrian Messmer

Synopsis
It starts on Facebook—an update that Nell doesn’t remember making. It’s bad enough that she’s dying and none of her friends know. Now, she’s pretty sure she’s going crazy. She sees the Sewercide Man everywhere she goes.
The bright, safe little town of Bandon is descending into darkness, dragging the inhabitants along for the ride. Death follows madness for those bound to the Sewercide Man’s will.
But the Sewercide Man is more than just a ghost or a monster. He is death without justice. He is destruction without remorse. He doesn’t have a plan.

He just wants to bring everyone home.

"A blend of gritty realism and dark supernatural, Psychopomp and Circumstance is Heathers meets It Follows, with a sprinkling of The Twilight Zone, all told with black humor, nihilist teen angst, and a buried need to be loved and accepted."—Richard Thomas, author of Tribulations

Review

A character-driven horror novel? Yes please!

Psychopomp and Circumstance is a complex story that reminds me of the horror stories and movies I used to watch in my teen years (we're talking 90s-early 2000s). Many might see this as an insult, but from me? Trust me, it's a compliment. I love how the author writes - almost artistically, if that makes sense? The focus is on the characters and their progress through the story which is what makes this story unique. Something that I truly enjoy is that each chapter is told from a different perspective. I feel that a story has so much more to say by doing so - the many angles make up a puzzle. There is such a thing as having too many POVs, but I don't find that happening here.

I don't want to say much especially considering that it is a horror novel! What I will say is that the novel reads very much like retro-horror, and just like a classic horror movie - you're left rooting for each character as they fight. I recommend this book for anyone up for some unique horror and detailed characterization. We all know I'm a sucker for both!

The Dead Dance Faster - Spirit Breaker
By Julie Ann Hacker

Synopsis

After stumbling upon a misguided trip into her horror-filled childhood in book #1, The Dead Dance Faster - Unsacred Awakening, the quagmire of secrecy and terror continues to unfold. Jael's mind boggles under the dense, manipulative charade of a reprobate, thriller religion. Spirit Breaker takes off where Unsacred Awakening's thrills twisted into a disquieted prologue of what's held within the pages of Spirit Breaker. The intensity of Jude's 'Screaming-Ego' lure has reached Jael revealing the seductive persuasion it wields as it continues to follow her through the next stage of her life.

Moving to Lousiana garners short-lived relief before Thomas Jude and Annalise hatch another conniving plan, which becomes seductively clear to the one closest to her, Shane--her partner, lover, and friend. Jael's thwarted back to Seven Hills, NY, the small town from which she escaped not long ago, and back to her childhood home, uncovering new lengths to which her divorced religion will go. 'DDF' (Dead Dance Faster) and 'Diversus' determinations were only the beginning. The war to keep Jael from freedom, to keep her reeling, to keep her mind imprisoned by fear, has established a battle for one coveted idol. And, the idol's priceless, the most precious--one she will not willingly give up--one to die for. Once she steps into this spiritual realm once again, she may never make it back home.

Allow Pastor Jude's shrouded mind bring to light hidden conjurings of life. Allow Jael's courage to break free and inspire you.

A saga filled with horror, mystery, suspense, drama, fear, diabolical wickedness, truth & love.
