As a Texan (have I ever mentioned that I'm from Texas?), I quite enjoy stories about strong, independent Texas women. Live Wire gave me exactly that. Maggie, the lead player in Live Wire, is a flawed and likable character. She's a tough lady looking to make her life just a bit less complicated - but when does that actually work? I enjoyed the richness of the story, along with Maggie and the people in her life. The mystery at the center of the story will definitely suck you in, and the end... well, lets say that you'll think one thing, but it won't be the end! You'll get what I mean when you read it! Hutchins' writing will not only get you wanting more, it will definitely make you fall in love with the woman at the center of it. For me, Maggie made Live Wire - and without having read anything else in the series, I can say that Hutchins' definitely knows what she's doing with her characters.

Moonlight & Whiskey
by Tricia Lynne

Synopsis

When life gives you curves, you gotta learn how to rock them.

Successful businesswoman Avery Barrows likes her dips and curves, but she’s sick of the haters telling her that she should be ashamed of her body instead of embracing it. Determined to send them a big f*** you, Avery resolves to cut loose during a girls’ trip, hightailing her quick-mouthed, plus-sized self to New Orleans. So, what’s a smart woman with a little extra gotta do to get laid in this town?

Not much if you ask Declan McGinn, the lead singer of BlackSmith. Tall, dark, and tattooed, with a body made for sin, Declan prefers his women as curvy as his guitars. Avery’s sharp tongue and keen mind makes him want her even more.

As they burn up the sheets, Avery and Declan realize this is no one-night (or even one-week) stand. But for all of her bluster, Avery isn’t sure she can handle any more rejection. Besides, Declan has demons of his own. Now Avery has a choice to make: play it safe, or place her trust in the hands of a man who’s as tempting as the devil himself.

Review

I shouldn't have liked this book. Truly, insta-love stories usually rub me the wrong way. I don't expect love stories in books to be realistic, but I like the characters to work for it a little. So, to say that my reaction to this book was a surprise, is truly an understatement.

Avery is taking a trip with her friend Kat to New Orleans - intent on having fun and maybe having a fling. Avery is tired of being the woman men leave, and the side piece to some guy's life. Upon arriving to their hotel, however, she is bumped into by a handsome Declan. And what proceeds from that chance meeting is definitely an adventure neither of them was expecting.

The reason why this almost insta-love story left me wanting to read without stopping was because of the chemistry between both of the characters. This was a definitely a "show not tell" story about emotions between two people who have been deeply hurt in their pasts. Neither expects to find love in the other. There is definitely a lot going on between Avery and Declan. The questioning of whether fated love exists, Avery's fears about her body and constantly being considered someone's side-piece, and Declan's venture into unknown territory - love and relationships.

It's truly a lovely book with a steamy romance and a surprisingly heaping amount of real life obstacles and fears. I recommend going into this story with an open mind if, like me, you get annoyed by the possible insta-love in romance novels. This one is definitely worth reading.

I've helped promote Alexia Gordon's work before, but this is my first time reviewing one of her books. Usually, starting a series anywhere else besides the first book is a HUGE NO NO for me. I am such a completist and I need to start from the BEGINNING...but for a mystery from a well-loved author? I'll do it sure, heh. And I was so glad that I did!

I want to people to know that, although I will always recommend you start from the very beginning in a series, it is not going to ruin the read for you. There is such a great mix of the natural cozy-ness of a "Cozy Mystery", the creativeness of having music involved AND the paranormal! I love a mystery with some paranormal twist to it and this book definitely satisfied me. In a world of cookie-cutter mysteries, it's refreshing to read such a creative undertaking. Gordon made it such a treat to read about someone as intelligent and eccentric as Gethsemane. Nothing is treated too lightly - it is such brilliant writing. Truly, one of my favorite things is that Gethsemane is a confident woman who doesn't need a counterpart to be seen as "whole" - she simply does what she does to the best of her ability. And guess what? She does it really well.

Mystery readers will surely not be disappointed! Read on!

Between Before and After
by Maureen Doyle McQuerry

Synopsis

“The carnage began with the roses. She hacked at their ruffled blooms until they dropped into monstrous drifts of red on the parched yellow lawn … Only two things kept my mother grounded to us: my uncle Stephen and stories.”

Fourteen-year-old Molly worries about school, friends, and her parents’ failed marriage, but mostly about her mother’s growing depression. Molly knows her mother is nursing a carefully-kept secret. A writer with an obsession for other people’s life stories, Elaine Donnelly is the poster child of repressed emotions.

Molly spends her California summer alternately watching out for her little brother Angus and tip-toeing around her mother’s raw feelings. Molly needs her mother more than ever, but Elaine shuts herself off from real human connections and buries herself in the lives and deaths of the strangers she writes about. When Uncle Stephen is pressed into the limelight because of his miracle cure of a young man, Elaine can no longer hide behind other people’s stories. And as Molly digs into her mother’s past, she finds a secret hidden in her mother’s dresser that may be the key to unlocking a family mystery dating to 1918 New York—a secret that could destroy or save their future.

Told in dual narratives between 1918 New York City and 1955 San Jose, California, Between Before and After, by award-winning author Maureen McQuerry, explores the nature of family secrets, resiliency, and redemption. This is an historical coming-of-age Young Adult story about the complex bonds between mothers and daughters.

Review

Between Before and After is truly such an enjoyable read! I am used to dual narratives in only romance novels (my catnip), so to have the dual narrative between two times in this story was really a treat. There is a ton of beautiful imagery and the writing had me wanting to figure out what was going to happen next. it is a book I found difficult to put down. It is a gorgeous story of determination and resilience that had me pulling for the characters all the way through. Doubly, since we have a dual narrative. Family mystery books usually having me cringing (again, like a previous review, let's not dig deep into that), but this one sucked me right in. Readers of the family narrative, especially those concerning family secrets, will definitely want to read this story!
