Seduced by a Scot
by Julia London

Synopsis

There’s no matchmaking an unruly heart

When a prominent Scottish family faces a major scandal weeks before their daughter’s wedding, they turn in desperation to the enigmatic fixer for the aristocracy, Nichol Bain. Remarkably skilled at making high-profile problems go away, Nichol understands the issue immediately. The family’s raven-haired ward, Maura Darby, has caught the wandering eye—and rather untoward advances—of the groom.

Nichol assuredly escorts Maura toward his proposed solution: an aging bachelor for her to marry. But rebellious Maura has no interest in marrying a stranger, especially when her handsome traveling companion has captivated her so completely. Thankfully, Nichol loves a challenge, but traveling with the bold and brash Maura has him viewing her as far more than somebody’s problem. Which raises a much bigger issue—how can he possibly elude disaster when the heart of the problem is his own?

Review

I've only read one highlander story so far (Karen Marie Moning's Beyond the Highland Mist - which I loved), so I was very excited when given the opportunity to read and review Julia London's Seduced by a Scot. This is truly a story worthy of attention because of how character driven it is. I love falling in love with characters from books.

Maura is stubborn and sassy, and Nichol is just so sweet. They both definitely have some similarities in that they've had some hardships in their backgrounds. Nichol is a sweetheart and just so lovable due to the respect and care he shows toward Maura (this should be standard right? I wish it was). Maura could very easily have gone through this journey by herself, but that wouldn't be too much of a romance right? Either way, she's one strong woman which I loved.

All in all I enjoyed Seduced by a Scot because it showed the struggles of both characters, emotionally and circumstantially, and their power and will to get through it - and ultimately be together.

At birth, Mick Trewlove, the illegitimate son of a duke, was handed over to a commoner. Despite his lowly upbringing, Mick has become a successful businessman, but all his wealth hasn’t satisfied his need for revenge against the man who still won’t acknowledge him. What else can Mick do but destroy the duke’s legitimate son—and woo the heir’s betrothed into his own unloving arms . . .

Orphaned and sheltered, Lady Aslyn Hastings longs for a bit of adventure. With her intended often preoccupied, Aslyn finds herself drawn to a darkly handsome entrepreneur who seems to understand her so well. Surely a lady of her station should avoid Mick Trewlove. If only he weren’t so irresistible . . .

As secrets are about to be exposed, Mick must decide if his plan for vengeance is worth risking what his heart truly desires.

PRAISE FOR BEYOND SCANDAL AND DESIRE:
“Heath builds a community of fascinating, intertwined characters that readers will be eager to get to know as they cheer for the driven hero and the spunky, smart heroine.” -- Publishers Weekly

“RITA Award–winner Heath’s new Sins for All Seasons series is off to an impressive start with an unforgettable, emotionally charged love story that will dazzle and delight readers with its exquisitely crafted characters, deliciously sensual romance, and impeccably rendered historical setting.” -- Booklist/ *STARRED* Review

“For the first book in the Sins for All Seasons series, Heath returns to the world of dark London — a world she understands as well as Dickens. Heath illuminates the city’s underbelly with a powerful romance of healing and redemption. Her talents for drawing readers into the era with her well-drawn, three dimensional characters and realistic dialogue sets her novels apart. The unexpected twists and turns of the plot guarantees it will be placed on your keeper shelf.” -- RT Book Reviews/ “Top Pick” Review

Lorraine Heath always dreamed of being a writer. After graduating from the University of Texas, she wrote training manuals, press releases, articles, and computer code, but something was always missing. When she read a romance novel, she not only became hooked on the genre, but quickly realized what her writing lacked: rebels, scoundrels, and rogues. She's been writing about them ever since. Her work has been recognized with numerous industry awards, including RWAs prestigious RITA. Her novels have appeared on the USA Today and New York Times bestseller lists.

He knew the moment Lady Aslyn spotted him. She stopped walking, tipped up her parasol slightly along with her chin and smiled softly as though she’d been kept indoors all day because of the rain—and the sun had suddenly made an appearance.

Drawing his horse to a halt, he dismounted with ease, removed his hat and waited for a more public acknowledgment from her.

“Mr. Trewlove.”

“Lady Aslyn, what a pleasure it is to find you in the park this afternoon.”

“And you, sir. I thought I might have seen you yesterday.”

What a bold chit she was. He’d not expected the subtle reprimand. “I had business that kept me away.” He cast a furtive glance at the servants hovering nearby, all appearing to be ready to pounce if he made an untoward movement. He resettled his gaze on the lady. “But you occupied my thoughts.”

A lovely blush rose up her neck to encompass her face and make her cheeks more pronounced. He had the fleeting thought that he was looking forward to discovering if the flush began at her toes. And he would discover it. Before the month was done, he intended to have her in his bed. She would be to him whatever the woman who had given birth to him had been to his father—and he’d throw the similarities into the duke’s face. Looking at her youth and innocence now, he refused to feel remorseful about the role she would play in his gaining satisfaction. He’d given the duke the opportunity to publicly recognize him, and the damned man had ignored each missive.

“Might we stroll together for a while?” he asked.

Her blush deepened, but she looked slightly uncomfortable as though uncertain where to go from here. She gave a barely perceptible nod. “I suppose there’s no harm in walking together for a few minutes.”

Guilt nagged at him. Was he a blackguard for using a girl who seemed far too innocent to be out alone among the wolves?

The Ugly Duchess (Fairy Tales Book 4)

by Eloisa James

Synopsis

“Eloisa James is extraordinary.”
—Lisa Kleypas

“Nothing gets me to the bookstore faster than a new novel by Eloisa James.”
—Julia Quinn

New York Times bestselling author Eloisa James gives the classic Hans Christian Andersen story of “The Ugly Duckling” a wonderful, witty, and delightfully passionate twist. The Ugly Duchess is another fairytale inspired romance from the unparalleled storyteller whose writing, author Teresa Medieros raves, “is truly scrumptious.” A sexy and fun historical romance, James’s winning tale of a glorious reawakening does not feature ducks and swans—rather it’s a charming story of a young woman unaware of her own beauty, suddenly duty-bound to wed the dashing gentleman who has always been her platonic best friend…until now.

Review

Well. What can I say - this book broke my heart. A lot.

But I'm starting in the middle. Let me back-track a little (and beware of spoilers - sorry!).

I'm so used to enemies to lovers stories, or friends to lovers, that this book really surprised me. It's basically a friends to lovers to enemies story. I tend to stay away from estranged spouses stories, but I was hooked into this one when I read just how much they loved each other. They loved each other not just as a man and a woman, but as friends. This is mainly why it broke my heart when they broke each other's hearts. And then 7 years pass (SEVEN YEARS!) before they see each other again, and the pain and hurt Theo feels throughout the story is just truly heartbreaking.

Reader, you may feel that I've given away a lot from this story, and for that, I'm sorry. However, this story has so much more than the small synopsis says above. This story was strong with character development, and detailed emotional passages for both Theo and James.  This was my first Eloisa James, and even though heartbreaking books are brutal, I will definitely look into more of her books because fictional heartbreak is necessary for the good bits some times.

Romancing the Duke
by Tessa Dare

Synopsis

In the first in Tessa Dare's captivating Castles Ever After series, a mysterious fortress is the setting for an unlikely love . . .

As the daughter of a famed author, Isolde Ophelia Goodnight grew up on tales of brave knights and fair maidens. She never doubted romance would be in her future, too. The storybooks offered endless possibilities.

And as she grew older, Izzy crossed them off. One by one by one.

Ugly duckling turned swan?
Abducted by handsome highwayman?
Rescued from drudgery by charming prince?

No, no, and… Heh.

Now Izzy’s given up yearning for romance. She’ll settle for a roof over her head. What fairy tales are left over for an impoverished twenty-six year-old woman who’s never even been kissed?

This one.

Review

I have not fully immersed myself in the historical/regency romance genre, frankly, because I'm a little afraid of it. Seriously - I think to myself, I'm reading about people that, if they had been real people, they would be dead by now. I also tricked myself into thinking I would come across words and customs that would totally confuse me. Why any of this actually keeps me from historical romance - I have no idea.

Romancing the Duke was absolutely the kind of historical/regency romance I wanted to ease into. It's so lovely, and the characters were well-rounded enough for my taste. Izzy is a the daughter of a famed author who also happens to star in her late father's famous book series. She's realistic, dreaming of romance while never expecting it to find her. Upon meeting Ransom, a duke, she realizes that he awakens some feelings in her she long thought forgotten. And Ransom, well, he's never met someone like Izzy before, and it doesn't take long for her weird ways to charm him.

I enjoyed the simpleness of Izzy, and the brusqueness of Ransom. Izzy is a good example of a smart, and strong willed character - and I believe it's exactly that which charms Ransom into feeling emotions that he didn't realize he could have.

If you're unsure if you'd like historical/regency novels, this is a great one to get you started!

Review

First of all - can we talk about that gorgeous cover??? I know people say not to judge a book by its cover, but we have to admit that the cover is what draws us in most of the time. And that up there, dear reader, is a fantastic cover. Gorgeous.

Okay, now on to the book. Murphy does a fantastic job writing a well-thought out and thought-provoking novel. The teaser tempts us with describing this work as a timeless tale and it is so fitting, because together (and separately) with Ama and Ekow, we travel to distant lands and times to find out their story. What the reader might be surprised in realizing is that we get the story through 4 individually told tales. There is dealings with reincarnation, so you don't let go of the characters of each story. Entwined and connected, Ama and Ekow somehow find their way back to each other.

Is this book a romance? Fantasy? Science Fiction? All of the above? I think that is for the reader to decide. Although the reader can definitely tell there is a formula to each story, I did not find that it took away from the main concept of these two lovers finding their way back to each other. If anything, it cemented the idea of soulmates for me. Murphy is able to tell this tale without it seeming cliche. If anything, it felt monumental - important. So, whether it's the love story or the concepts of reincarnation and fantasy that get you hooked - no worries. It is definitely a work to be read.
