You know, I never saw an officer, an EMT, a fireman, or an ER crew ask anyone what their politics were and then refuse to care for them because of their answer. The color of skin pigment, the last name, the amount of money in a bank account, none of that mattered.

All that mattered was someone needed help, and they had the skills as well as the burning desire to do so.

Yes, they are only human and internally flawed and prejudiced as any other. But their true nature, their crowning glory in mortal life, is their ability to rise above those flaws and prejudices when called upon.

In a world of hungry, destructive wolves, they stand as the sheepdog who serves and protects the flock.

Ben H. English is an eighth-generation Texan who grew up in the Big Bend. At seventeen, he joined the Marines, ultimately becoming a chief scout-sniper as well as an infantry platoon sergeant. Later he worked in counterintelligence and traveled to over thirty countries on four continents.

At Angelo State University, he graduated Magna Cum Laude along with other honors.
Afterwards, Ben had a career in the Texas Highway Patrol, holding several instructor billets involving firearms, driving, patrol procedures, and defensive tactics.

After retirement, he decided to try his hand at writing. His first effort, Yonderings, was accepted by a university press and garnered some awards. His second, Destiny’s Way, led to a long-term, multi-book contract. This was followed by Out There: Essays on the Lower Big Bend, The Uvalde Raider, and now Black and White: Tales of the Texas Highway Patrol.

His intimate knowledge of what he writes about lends credence and authenticity to his work. Ben knows how it feels to get hit and hit back, or being thirsty, cold, wet, hungry, alone, or exhausted beyond imagination. Finally, he knows of not only being the hunter but also the hunted.

Ben and his wife have two sons who both graduated from Annapolis. He still likes nothing better than grabbing a pack and some canteens and heading out to where few others venture.

Just as he has done throughout most of his life…

If you are a fan of a love story, you probably know that feeling you get when you watch a Hallmark movie, right? That sweetness tugs at your heart and you're left feeling somehow fuller than you did before.

That's sort of how I felt as I read Love and the Dream Come True by Tammy L. Gray.

In Love, we meet Cameron Lee who has lost some love for music - not only his passion, but his bread and butter. On the precipice of having to make a decision of where his life is going, he tries to escape for a bit by going to his sister's wedding. Lexie Walters is a single mom who has gone through quite a bit in her life. Through it all, she seems to maintain a sense of optimism and balance.

I have not read the other two books in this series, and I am sure it would be beneficial to have read those before this one (I am very much a completist and love doing things in order), but I did not feel cheated by reading Love and the Dream Come True first. There was much too heart in this story to feel cheated by missing out on the first two. In between the pages of this lovely book, I got a sense of, not just love, but humanity. Caring for one another. In the story, Cameron is attracted to Lexie, sure, but he's attracted to her life and being. Lexie's sense of optimism and the humor she and her daughter have in their life attracts Cameron like a light bug to lamp.

And likewise, there was much beauty in the struggle Cameron was experiencing. Cameron's passion for music, at once both maddening and also a blessing, is shown to the reader as a way of telling us that, as passionate as we can be about something, we also have to learn to roll with the experience instead of wanting to control it at all times. There is beauty in flexibility

Love and the Dream Come True is a lovely romance that I am sure many readers will love. If you're looking for a clean romance with a lot of heart - look no further.

As someone who has been working in the mental health area for about 11 years now, I have sadly heard my fair share of the injustices of the world - which includes that of sexual harassment and abuse of authority. In Lise Olsen's Code of Silence, we learn of Cathy McBroom's experiences as she endured harassment and assault by her boss, the US District Judge Samuel Kent, when McBroom worked as a case manager.

As most survivors of sexual harassment and assault will tell you, the problems do not stop when you come forward. Unfortunately, survivors will continue to experience hardship after hardship after telling their truth. My respect and gratitude toward these individuals, especially women since a disproportionate amount of survivors are women, grows with every story that I read because I know that it is so very difficult to speak the truth knowing that the likelihood of your experience getting easier is very slim.

It is due to reports like that which Olsen has provided us with that make the complete difference when we talk about accountability. Olsen has given us a thorough account of her investigation into McBroom's experiences. This has proven to do few things for me in particular: (1) it has given me background on a story I didn't not know about before reading this book, (2) Olsen has provided this story for me in a way that has made Code of Silence to be quite a page-turner, and (3) it has given a louder voice to survivors.

I recommend this book to all readers, but especially those who enjoy the topic of true crime and social sciences. It is a fantastic piece of work meant to make you think and dig deeper. Bravo.
