Review: Final Girls

Ten years ago, college student Quincy Carpenter went on vacation with five friends and came back alone, the only survivor of a horror movie–scale massacre. In an instant, she became a member of a club no one wants to belong to—a group of similar survivors known in the press as the Final Girls: Lisa, who lost nine sorority sisters to a college dropout's knife; Sam, who went up against the Sack Man during her shift at the Nightlight Inn; and now Quincy, who ran bleeding through the woods to escape Pine Cottage and the man she refers to only as Him. The three girls are all attempting to put their nightmares behind them and, with that, one another. Despite the media's attempts, they never meet.

Now, Quincy is doing well—maybe even great, thanks to her Xanax prescription. She has a caring almost-fiancé, Jeff; a popular baking blog; a beautiful apartment; and a therapeutic presence in Coop, the police officer who saved her life all those years ago. Her memory won’t even allow her to recall the events of that night; the past is in the past.

That is until Lisa, the first Final Girl, is found dead in her bathtub, wrists slit; and Sam, the second Final Girl, appears on Quincy's doorstep. Blowing through Quincy's life like a whirlwind, Sam seems intent on making Quincy relive the past, with increasingly dire consequences, all of which makes Quincy question why Sam is really seeking her out. And when new details about Lisa's death come to light, Quincy's life becomes a race against time as she tries to unravel Sam's truths from her lies, evade the police and hungry reporters, and, most crucially, remember what really happened at Pine Cottage, before what was started ten years ago is finished.

Review

This was my first Riley Sager and yes, it took me a long time to read it. Here's the thing - I'm used to romance books. lol I love horror and true crime, but you know what romance has made me expect? Usually a quickly unfolding story with a usually good ending. They say the romance genre is formulaic and that's because it is...because it works.

So, what does this have to do with Final Girls?

It means I had to be a whole lotta patient with the story. The story takes a bit to get into - the reader is left to wonder just what happened to Quincy that fateful night when someone killed her five friends. We learn a bit more about her even though she remains something of a mystery throughout most of the book.

It was really in the last third of the book where I felt, whoa, okay...here we go. Did I think all the build up was worth it? Ehhhh. I could have done with less of it, but the in all honesty, it really is the third of the book that made this book go from a 2 star to a 3 star for me. I wish it would have been higher. I am, however, looking forward to reading more of Sager's books because that last third...it was fantastic.

Nightshade’s Bite by Zoe Forward
Blood Wars Book 2 (Each book is a standalone)

Synopsis

Kiera Rossard’s secret life just got complicated. When not being a vampire aristocrat she’s leader of the Nightshade League, a rebel vampire society that rescues werewolves during the interspecies war. Everyone wants her dead—vampires and the werewolves who don’t know her secret. Starting with the wolf she just saved—Michael Durand, the most vicious killer of her kind in existence. Something about the notorious werewolf sets her blood on fire.

She’s not good at resisting temptation. So what if vampires always bite when they’re turned on? And so what if one drop of his blood will kill her? What’s life without a little risk?

Michael doesn’t like vampires. At all. But now he’s losing his mind over the dark desire Kiera stirs in him. He should plot her death. Only, she’s hot and mouthy. Staying near her a bit longer is irresistible. When unforgiving forces hone in on her secret identity, he must decide between duty to his people and protecting her. But if he stays, who will protect her from him?

Each book in the Blood Wars series is STANDALONE:
* The Way You Bite
* Nightshade's Bite

Review

I’m a sucker for vampire stories (haha, pun was not intended, but now it’s totally intended). I’m an even bigger sucker for vampire and werewolf stories ESPECIALLY if there is a love story involved. In Zoe Forward’s Nightshade’s Bite, I got all my boxes ticked...mostly.

Kiera and Michael are each badasses in their own right. Kiera’s mission in leading the Nightshade League and defying her so-called inherent right to hate all werewolves is just sexy. Resistance against hating others for simply being who they are is sexy people. On the other hand, Michael’s grumpiness and eons age weariness is a great backstory for him. What can I say, I like grumpy dudes with a good heart.

Overall, I loved the love story concept between Kiera and Michael. Fated mates who definitely should not be together is my catnip. HOWEVER, one of the many pitfalls of the fated mates trope is that there is danger of insta-love...and I don’t like insta-love. There is some hesitancy, especially since any taste of Michael’s blood will kill Kiera, but just not as much as I would like.

I also found myself skimming past a lot of the story to get to the interactions between Kiera and Michael. I just didn’t find myself caring too much about the rest of the story that wasn’t about their unfolding love story. And then I still found myself not getting all I wanted from that story either.

Nightshade’s Bite has great reviews on Goodreads, so, it’s doing something right for people. I just found myself wanting more. It did give me major Underworld vibes, so I’m gonna go watch that now. If you read this book, let me know what you think!

Gated 3
by Matt Drabble

Synopsis

It’s time for the multi award winning trilogy to come to an end, but will anyone be left standing.

It was the chance of a lifetime for Avery Grant, the opportunity to run an election campaign for a candidate that seemed like the real deal.

Christian Tolanson has risen through the ranks of British politics. A man with a unique ability to inspire those around him to almost cult like levels of devotion. He has lived many lives down through the ages from his humble beginnings as a child preacher. But now his life force is finally starting to fade and time is running out pushing him to desperate levels. A man consumed by his own destiny and ready to burn the world to get what he wants.

Avery will discover the path that many have walked before her and never returned from. A realisation that anything that seems too good to be true, will likely get you killed.

Review

I have already reviewed so many of Drabble's works that I've honestly lost count - in a good way! His works are full of thrills and horror fun, and this book is no different. If anything, it's probably a bit more poignant due to the theme running in with election time. But it is exactly because of that fact that I think readers will take something extra from Gated 3. Seeing two sides of the coin, a hopeful onlooker/supporter, and a man who is used to leading and getting what he wants, no matter the cost - that is what you are getting into with this book. For fans of thrillers, this is definitely a book you need to try out.

And if you haven't already read other stuff by Matt Drabble - what are you waiting for!?

Yet as scorching days melt into sultry nights, Holly is drawn to the mysterious capitaine, with his unexpected sense of honor and his searing touch. Review

I went into this book totally not knowing what I was going to be reading. This hardly happens to me as I have a pretty good memory in regards to book synopses, etc. But all I could remember about this book was that I had read the synopsis, been intrigued and had it on my "to be read" list from the library.

What I got was a suspenseful romance! So not what I thought. Deception Island brings a great mix of suspense-thriller with Rafe, a soldier with a dark history, needing to kidnap an American Heiress in order to get his son back from his captors. What he doesn't expect is Holly, the American Heiress's double. Holly is strong, quick-witted, and has had to do her own share of fighting in order to survive. Together, they weather plans gone awry, and a growing attraction to each other - something that couldn't possible happen - right?

I don't have much background in suspenseful romance, but I was all over this book. My motivation to read it was actually that it was due at the library soon, haha. I'm glad I did though, because it had me turning page after page, hoping for Holly's well being, and for Rafe to be something more than what he was supposedly "destined" to be. This book is for any adventure-seeker who also enjoys a steamy romance. You won't regret reading this book!

Raven's Peak
by Lincoln Cole

Synopsis

A quiet little mountain town is hiding a big problem. When the townsfolk of Raven's Peak start acting crazy, Abigail Dressler is called upon to find out what is happening. She uncovers a demonic threat unlike any she's ever faced and finds herself in a fight just to stay alive.

She rescues Haatim Arison from a terrifying fate and discovers that he has a family legacy in the supernatural that he knows nothing about. Now she's forced to protect him, which is easy, and also trust him if she wants to save the townsfolk of Raven's Peak. Trust, however, is considerably more difficult for someone who grew up living on the knife's edge of danger.

Can they discover the cause of the town's insanity and put a stop to it before it is too late?

Review

If you're a frequent reader of this blog, first of all: Thank you! And second of all, you know how much I love character development. Raven's Peak has at its center two well-written and complex characters, Abigail and Haatim. Horror/thriller/supernatural stories already have my attention, but what makes this story stand out are the aforementioned characters and their progression through the story, as well as the backdrop of another world being at the basis of the one Haatim thought he understood.

Abigail is a demon hunter and Haatim becomes a sidekick of sorts. The story is fast-paced, and grabs the reader from the get-go. I found myself really enjoying the character of Abigail because her kickass ways reminded me of the Buffy and Faith days. Ah, nostalgia.

Anyone interested in a horror/thriller that has its twists and turns with a female at the front of it all will definitely enjoy this book!
