The Rule Book by Jennifer Blackwood

Starr Media Second-Assistant Survival Guide

1. Don't call your hot boss the antichrist to his face.
2. Don't stare at hot boss's, um, package or his full sleeve of tattoos. (No. Really. Stop!)
3. Don't get on the malicious first assistant's bad side.
4. Don't forget to memorize the 300-page employee manual.
5. If you value your cashmere, steer clear of boss’s dog.
6. Boss’s dimples are lust-inducing. Do. Not. Give. In.
7. “The elevator ate your clothes” is not a valid excuse for showing up to important meetings half dressed
8. Don't break seven of the rules within the first week of employment if you, ya know, are in dire need of money to support your sick mom.
9. Whatever you do, don’t fall for the boss. See rule eight about sick mom.
10. Never forget the rules.

When he meets Little Bo Peep at a Halloween party, he thinks he’s scored big. Instead, he wakes up in a jail cell with the corseted beauty. Because of him, she’s in trouble and when he discovers her true identity, he realizes, his nightmare is just beginning.

The always shooting-for-perfection Priscilla Winslow can’t believe her good deed has cost her a soccer career. Even though she knows it isn’t Preston’s fault, she can’t forgive him for the disaster that is her life. She just wishes her damn body would get the message. Every time she sees him, it’s all she can do not to kiss him.

When everything crashes down around him, Preston will have to decide if doing the right thing is worth losing it all.

The Billionaire's Intern
by Crystal Kaswell

Synopsis

She needs this job. He needs her tied to his bed and screaming his name.

Lizzy Wilder is desperate to stay in New York City with her sister Kat, the one person she trusts. Lizzy's only hope is a programming internship at hot tech startup Odyssey. But there's a problem: the company's CEO is enigmatic billionaire Nick Marlowe--the impossibly sexy one night stand she never expected to see again.

Nick stays in control of his life. He doesn't f*** interns. Period. If Lizzy wants to work at Odyssey, she needs to keep things platonic.

She tries. Hard. But the connection they shared, the way he captivated her-- there's no way her body or her heart will allow her to forget him. There's no way she can work under him without working under him.

Can she risk the job she needs for the man she wants? And can she really handle being under his control if he wants her too?

Review

I usually really love billionaire boss novels, but this book was pretty flat in my opinion. It was missing some aspects that I enjoy, like alternating points of view between the male and female protagonists. I love love LOVE reading the man's POV...and all I got here was the woman's POV...and it was a whiny one at that. Lizzy is annoying...so annoying and a stalker! And she's 19 years old! There is way too much dirty talk between this TEENAGER and a "grown" man for my liking. I usually don't get all judge-y like this...but Lizzy is whiny and annoying like a stereotypical teenager. I totally believe that a 19 year old can be mature - Lizzy is totally not that. Also, too many people using the term "eye-fuck" - that term is NOT a common one. And every time Nick opens his mouth...he sounds like an asshole. It was way too close to "Grey" territory than I would like. Ew.

Ultimately, I could not finish the book. It was too much whining...not enough romance for me.

**I also do not know why the cover is different than what NetGalley posted is the title....

To Katie With Love
by Erica Lucke Dean

Synopsis

Banker Katie James has a serious thing for romance novels. She’d almost rather settle for a fictional boyfriend than risk her heart on a flesh-and-blood man. Besides, the only real guy she’s remotely interested in is her rich, unattainable client, the mysterious Cooper Maxwell.

Looking less like the ultra-conservative man she knows and more like a drop-dead sexy character from one of her books, Cooper crashes Katie’s 29th birthday party. But one too many drinks lands Katie in uncharted territory… Cooper’s bedroom!

Drunk on love, Katie dives headfirst into the relationship only to discover that Cooper is keeping secrets… dangerous ones. As if things couldn’t get worse, her meddling mother makes a surprise visit, digging up a whole new set of problems.

Who would have guessed having an assassin for a boyfriend would be the least of her worries?

Review

I was totally surprised by this book. I feel the need to make that the first thing you read because it is so rare in the romance novel business to be surprised. But - I so was! So - spoilers lie ahead - you've been warned.

When I first started reading the book, I was really confused, but I just went with the flow. It was funny and the protagonist, Katie, is a romance novel lover. When she becomes involved with Cooper, it totally seems like it's too good to be true. Honestly, I was really starting to believe that he was an assassin. He was super mysterious and...well, secretive. But what he ended up being was so much more interesting! I said this review was fun of spoilers, but I can't let this one go - it's too unique. So, just take my word for it. The novel had a great balance of romance, mystery, and intrigue. I mean, I thought he was an assassin!

The Shelf Life of Ashes
by Hollis Giammatteo

Synopsis

When Hollis Giammatteo sought a job working with the elderly, she did so with the intention of finding models of healthy aging. And she failed.

In The Shelf Life of Ashes,
Giammatteo chronicles her experiences with her wards, as well as the trip she embarks upon when her mother, who is convinced she is dying, entreats her to come “home.” Trips back, traumas triggered, identity in crisis, equanimity gained―this quasi-comic, concentrated journey engages the reader in the process of naming and facing the tasks involved in growing old, while asking a simple but weighted question: Can aging be done well?

Review

When I first learned about this book through the blog tour that I'm on (Truth of Dare Blog Tour from Book Sparks), I was a bit wary of this one. It's not the idea of death that got me - it was the idea of other people's death (i.e. people I know) that got me thinking.

This book is a true account of Hollis's experiences with the elderly and her own family. She takes us to a place where I have always been terrified of visiting - that of the death of a parent. There is so much more to this story, however. The experiences that Hollis has gone through, both lonely and beautiful, kept me going. There are so many ways we can grow older, and reading Hollis's work encourage me to continue with some tenderness and laughter.

Anyone who reads this story can expect to read about (and want) a life that is bigger - maybe even better - than what we currently have. It was definitely an eye-opening journey.

Dark Touch
by Aimee L. Salter

Synopsis

Tully isn't alone in her skin. Whenever she touches someone, they feel everything she feels. All her ugliness. All her darkness. All her pain.

The only thing she wants is to be left alone--and to finally get out of her small Oregon town.

But then she meets Chris. He's everything she's not. Light. Trusting. Innocent. And he wants Tully.

Tully knows she should spare him the heartache of being with her. But when he touches her, she's not sure she'll have the strength to push him away--until he learns about her dark past, and what really goes on in her ever-decaying home.

From the author of Every Ugly Word comes a poignant, emotionally raw story about the violence that plays out behind closed doors and the all-consuming passion of first love.

Review

I received an ebook copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I really enjoyed this book! It was unlike other YA books that I've read...and I've read quite a bit.

Tully is a young girl who has gone through some very tough times in her life that started with the death of her mother. Now, without her, she's stuck in a home, terrified of her father who doesn't know how to be a father, and with a special "gift" of her own. Whomever she touches ends up feeling whatever she is feeling. Not the best thing when Tully is already feeling isolated.

Then Tully meets Chris and all bets are off.

I don't need to feel the pull toward him,
to be measured by him and know I come up short. - Tully

Salter did a wonderful job in combining a true-to-life kind of story, that of a young girl struggling through losing those closest to her while having to isolate herself, and adding a magical element to it.
