Where the Forest Meets the Stars
by Glendy Vanderah

Synopsis

After the loss of her mother and her own battle with breast cancer, Joanna Teale returns to her graduate research on nesting birds in rural Illinois, determined to prove that her recent hardships have not broken her. She throws herself into her work from dusk to dawn, until her solitary routine is disrupted by the appearance of a mysterious child who shows up at her cabin barefoot and covered in bruises.

The girl calls herself Ursa, and she claims to have been sent from the stars to witness five miracles. With concerns about the child’s home situation, Jo reluctantly agrees to let her stay—just until she learns more about Ursa’s past.

Jo enlists the help of her reclusive neighbor, Gabriel Nash, to solve the mystery of the charming child. But the more time they spend together, the more questions they have. How does a young girl not only read but understand Shakespeare? Why do good things keep happening in her presence? And why aren’t Jo and Gabe checking the missing children’s website anymore?

Though the three have formed an incredible bond, they know difficult choices must be made. As the summer nears an end and Ursa gets closer to her fifth miracle, her dangerous past closes in. When it finally catches up to them, all of their painful secrets will be forced into the open, and their fates will be left to the stars.

Review

This story is quite unlike any others I've read. Granted, this may be because I tend to stay away from books about families. Let's not think about what that says about me. Let's move on.

Where the Forest Meets the Stars is about Joanna, a lonely woman, who meets Ursa, a captivating little girl who seemingly appears out of nowhere. It's truly a story of the random connection between strangers and how those strangers can ultimately become like family. Joanna, along with her neighbor Gabriel, try to figure out the mystery behind Ursa's appearance. We learn a lot about survival, sadness, family, and miracles as the story continues.

There were instances where the story lagged, perhaps with tidbits that weren't all that essential to the main story, However, it's a story that has left me thinking about it long after I finished it, and it has really made me think about the concept of "home" and family. I recommend readers give this book a try as any book that leaves you thinking about it some time after truly has something about it to make it special.

Fallen Star (Starstruck #2)

Review

You know...there are just some authors that make me so happy to see that they have a new book coming out. Tessa Dare. Sarah J. Maas. Kristen Callihan.  Stephen King. Etc.

And one of those authors is Susannah Nix.

Nix knows how to write my favorite heroines and heroes. They are flawed and real. If you haven't taken a look at her Chemistry Lessons series - you are truly doing yourself a disservice.

With that said, the Starstruck series follows through with Nix's flawed characters. My absolute favorite so far is the first in the series, Rising Star, for its adorable friends to lovers dynamic.

Fallen Star takes what we grew to love in Rising Star and throws it on itself. Instead of a sweet hero learning his way, we get a hero who has been to hell and back due to his addictions and past. Scott is labeled as a bad boy, but what Nix's writing reminds us (and the story's heroine, Grace) is that there is a person lying underneath that label. So much happens in this story that you can't really pinpoint it as an enemies to lovers, friends to lovers, etc. It doesn't need a label really because what the story teaches its reader is that labels do not matter. We are more than our labels.

The story that unfolds between Scott and Grace is one of understanding, fear, and learning to be brave. This is truly a love story that is honest about how imperfect love can be, and how it makes the characters (and us) better because of it.

I recommend this story to everyone who loves romance, and for those on the fringes of wondering about romance. Romance is more than the "cheesy" covers with naked people - romance is emotion and empathy. Romance is so much more.

About the Author

Susannah Nix is the author of quirky contemporary romances about smart women and swoony men, including the Chemistry Lessons series of romcoms featuring STEM heroines and the Starstruck series of movie star romances. She lives in Texas with her husband, two ornery cats, and a flatulent pit bull.

When she’s not writing, Susannah enjoys reading, cooking, knitting, watching too much television, and getting distracted by Tumblr. She is also a powerlifter who can deadlift as much as Captain America weighs.

The Hiding Place
by C.J. Tudor

Synopsis

Joe never wanted to come back to Arnhill. After the way things ended with his old gang--the betrayal, the suicide, the murder--and after what happened when his sister went missing, the last thing he wanted to do was return to his hometown. But Joe doesn't have a choice. Because judging by what was done to that poor Morton kid, what happened all those years ago to Joe's sister is happening again. And only Joe knows who is really at fault.

Lying his way into a teaching job at his former high school is the easy part. Facing off with former friends who are none too happy to have him back in town--while avoiding the enemies he's made in the years since--is tougher. But the hardest part of all will be returning to that abandoned mine where it all went wrong and his life changed forever, and finally confronting the shocking, horrifying truth about Arnhill, his sister, and himself. Because for Joe, the worst moment of his life wasn't the day his sister went missing.

It was the day she came back.

Review

This is my first C.J. Tudor book, but it will definitely not be my last!

In The Hiding Place, we meet Joe - a somewhat odd man returning back home to investigate the background of a recent murder-suicide. It isn't necessarily the act itself that draws Joe back to his hometown, but rather the instances leading up to the act that makes him return.

From the very beginning, the reader is wary of Joe. As the story unfolds, we find out more and more about our protagonist - but each tidbit only serves to confuse (and intrigue!) us more.

I did not know what to expect from this story, but what I got was a thriller/horror novel which is exactly the kind of books that I adore. Tudor does a wonderful job of providing us an eerie atmosphere, whether it is in an empty house, or the school yard. There is an ominous feeling that follows the story wherever it leads, no matter what is going on, and I love it.

I recommend this book to lovers of thrilling horror. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Reading Goals

Do you track what you read?

I know I do. I have for a few years now. It's partly curiosity (how much can I actually read in a year?) and partly motivational (I know I can read more than this!).

I use Goodreads and have dabbled using Bookly. Goodreads has the benefit of being free to use, with an overall easy way of categorizing what I do read (by the way, click here if you'd like to be friends on Goodreads!).

Currently this is what my reading challenge for 2019 looks like:

Picture
I've been criticized for my goal of 200 books. I mean, criticized. Can you believe it? It makes me laugh every time I think about it. First of all, it shouldn't matter to anyone what my personal reading challenge is. I love to read and I love to push myself to read more all the time.

Second of all, there are better things to think about. Seriously.

I love the look of Goodreads' infographics when it comes to the reading challenge. It doesn't say much, but it says what it needs to. I cringe when I read "16 books behind schedule" because it's like I can hear a ticking clock in the back of my mind and anyone who really knows me, knows how sensitive I am to a ticking clock. Both literally and figuratively.

I'm not too hard on myself if I don't follow through with my goals. For example, I had the same goal last year, but didn't make it. I know life happens, and I can't predict how I'll be feeling. Sometimes, I don't feel well enough to read a book and that's okay. I've gotten better at being nicer to myself.

But it sure feels good to see that number rise lol

How about you? Do you track your reading? Why/why not?
