I must admit - I felt I was a bit out of my element when I chose to review Amanda Cabot's Out of the Embers. I wasn't one of those kids that got to read Little House on the Prairie and I read Anne of Green Gables as an adult (I did love it!). These are the examples I have of small town country life. But I am definitely open-minded enough to try a genre/sub genre I haven't explored before.

One of the first things I appreciated from Out of the Embers was the attention to detail regarding the surroundings. The scenery of Mesquite Springs was rich and the perfect backdrop for the story. I found Evelyn Radcliffe and and her companion Polly to be sweet characters to accompany. I enjoy stories of new beginnings growing out of hardship - and that is most definitely what happened to both Evelyn and Polly. There was a hearty mix of new beginnings, hardship, love and mystery.

I believe that Out of the Embers is a wonderful beginning to a brilliant series. Something I want to make sure readers know is that this book reads the way a train travels - it is consistent and steady. There are no drastic turns and flips - when you read this book, you read to enjoy the scenery. And enjoy it you surely will.

I like the train analogy -- and that you said it looks to be a brilliant series! I'm in! Thanks for the review.
