What I found within the pages of Sparrows was an evolving story of friendship, hope, and forgiveness. Tree and Cedar first meet when they join the US Calvary and eventually end up a cowhand and cook, respectively, on a cattle ranch. Although we do learn about Cedar, the story itself centers mostly on Tree and I find him to be the evolutionary character in this story. In fact, it is the juxtaposition of Tree's character and that of Gato Montes that really shows us the two sides of a coin. We see Tree's penchant for doing the right thing and having integrity up against the harshness and cruelty that is Montes. Examples of Montes' brutality serves the purpose of showing us just who someone can be if they let go or never learn to hold onto their humanity. The humanity of doing what's right and having honor. Anyone who reads my reviews knows that I am fueled by awesome characters. Having Tree go up next to someone like Montes only illuminated Tree's integrity and honest heart even further.
I recommend Sparrows to any reader who is enthralled by interesting and honest characters. This book will surely not disappoint.
