A Study in Seduction
(A Daring Hearts novel)
by Nina Rowan

Synopsis

A HEART DIVIDED

The lovely Lydia Kellaway can solve the most complex puzzles. The one challenge she can't top? Managing the most infuriating man she's ever encountered.

Alexander Hall, Viscount Northwood, has purchased a one-of-a-kind locket from a pawnshop, unaware of the priceless sentiment it holds for Lydia. The gentlemanly thing to do would be to simply return it. But Alexander is curious to see just how bold this brilliant beauty will be...

A LOVE UNEQUALED

What begins as a playful wager quickly escalates. As their sizzling attraction grows, even Lydia can't account for the feelings Alexander arouses with his smile, or the fire he ignites with his touch. But when a dark family secret is suddenly thrown into the equation, it just might divide them forever . . .

Review

This was my first time reading a book that was romance/erotica (Amazon has this listed as erotica?) that was NOT contemporary. I really enjoyed it! I think the reason why I enjoyed it so much despite it not being contemporary is because the heroine is a mega math genius and I love intelligent characters. I especially love characters that feel comfort from their interests. There is also a part of me that has always been fascinated with mathematics even though I pretty much....well, let's just say I don't do well in the math department. Nevertheless, I have been infatuated with the idea of mathematics and people who wield it like the language it is. It's just sexy.

Okay - so the characters: I enjoyed Alexander's loyalty, though I feel that the reader is not given enough information about who he was before he met Lydia. I don't mean information about his family or his prior engagement - I wanted more information about what kind of man he was before Lydia. BUT - maybe that's the whole point, that he was always that man and it took someone like Lydia to bring it out? Let me know what you think when/if you read it.

Lydia was awesome because she's so damn smart. An intelligent woman in the mathematical world of men is just HOT. Sorry sorry - I digress. Her caring nature comes out through and through and it made me wish she had a female friend to confide in. I cared for both of these characters.

The story itself unfolded well - it made me happy and sad, and there is even some action in there. I enjoyed it so much that I already ordered the second novel of this series which I think is about Alexander's brother whom I found quite interesting in his "cameos" in this book. I recommend this book for individuals who may not know if they like romance stories set in another time period. It's a good one to ease into :)

I don't know how to classify this book. I feel it wrong to consider it a historical romance when there isn't much history. I don't think it's a regency romance because it doesn't just deal with the rich. If you know how to classify this book, please let me know!

Boiling Point
A Crossing the Line novel
by Tessa Bailey

Synopsis

Falling for a con man is the most dangerous game of all...
Con artist Austin Shaw's been in disguise so long he's not sure where his fake identities end and he begins. Now that he's been strong-armed into working for a specialized undercover unit working with the Chicago police—criminals with unique “skills”—the last thing he needs is to risk his iron control. Especially when it comes to a certain stunningly sexy hacker who tempts him with every look of disdain.
Polly Banks will never, ever trust a con man. On the trail of a ruthless crook who destroyed the only family she's ever known, Polly is unnerved by the shadow who follows her every move. The one who makes her pulse pound and breath short with lust. Austin. He's infuriating, enigmatic, and pure sex appeal, and she's determined to resist him.
But an untrustworthy man of disguise can become anyone he wants...including a man that Polly must trust if she's to escape their dangerous game alive.

Review
I want to thank Entangled Publishing for letting me get a review ebook copy of this from NetGalley. I agreed to write an honest review - but I always write honest reviews, dear readers.

There are a lot of things I loved about Boiling Point and some things that irked me a little. Let's start with the love. I had never read a book about crime or con men or anything like that, so it was really fun to experience this type of ex-criminal squad - still tough, but working for the good guys. Austin, who I imagine has a sexy British accent, is lovable as a tough as nails, but sweet guy. Polly is a sweet woman who can outwit most people - plus, she sounds GORGEOUS. The more I read romance/erotica, the more I realize that I am a sucker for the enemies-to-lovers trope...which is what you get with Boiling Point. These two start off hating each other - or, seemingly so as we learn that the only thing Austin seems to hate about Polly is the fact that he can't have her. There's quite a bit of action - both in the bedroom and out. I was not disappointed in the slightest with those scenes. I really came to care about Austin and Polly as characters even though it felt like I read the book super fast.

Now, the things that irk me. Keep in mind - these aspects may irk me, but they do not, in any way, take away from the core of the story. For one, I was really lost at the beginning. Like, super lost. This may have been because this is the 3rd book from the Crossing the Line series, but I feel like that could have been a way to bridge it for those readers who haven't read the first and second books. Also, Polly is a hacker, but rarely do we have any scenes where she hacks. I get that it's a solitary activity, but all I kept hearing was about what an awesome hacker she is. That may be so and it might have been described in the other two books, but I wish I could have read a bit more about it here. I love hacker girls - hacker girls are not only hot, but awesome. Also, there is a section at the end, in which, I'm pretty sure, the author wants to bridge this book with her next book and...it just kind bored me. I don't care enough about THAT character (I don't like spoilers readers, so just try to follow me) right now because I'm still with Polly and Austin. It didn't feel smooth enough for me. I was too impatient to keep reading about this lovely couple.

Oh! How can I forget the best thing ever!? What I absolutely loved about this book was that it

The Harder You Fall
(The Original Heartbreakers #3)
by Gena Showalter

Synopsis
Millionaire video-game creator Lincoln West has a dark and tragic past. The sought-after bachelor lives by a rigid schedule and a single rule—one relationship per year, lasting no more than two months. No exceptions. He moved to small town Strawberry Valley, Oklahoma, with his brothers-by-circumstance hoping to escape the worst of his memories—until a brash beauty dredges up long-buried emotions.

A reformed party girl, Jessie Kay Dillon is determined to walk the straight and narrow. But her love-hate sizzle with West is just too irresistible. They can't be near each other without tearing off their clothes, but the last thing she needs is to be his next two-month dump. Can she be the one exception? Because as any former girl-gone-wild knows: rules are made to be broken

Review

*does a little shimmy* I LOVED THIS BOOK!!! This was totally an "on a whim" purchase from the grocery store. This is also the reason why I didn't know that this is actually the third book in Showalter's The Original Heartbreakers series. I've considered getting the first two books - but I feel like I couldn't possibly love any couple in this series more than I love Jessie Kay and West. *dreamy sigh*

Okay, so - Jessie Kay is awesome. She is sarcastic, badass, but also vulnerable. Both she and West feel damaged, but they are good and strong characters. I admire the determination each character has in wanting to make their lives better. Jessie Kay wants to find someone in her life that will appreciate her, and in the meantime she decides to take care of herself. She does this instead of settling for just anyone to throw her a scrap of time. West is determined not to hurt those he loves and does so by keeping from his old habits (i.e. drugs and alcohol). They are so strict with themselves that they need some help in loosening up - which they do together.  I just really enjoyed these characters. I might go back and read #1 and #2 - but I think I've already read about the best couple <3

Perfection
A Neighbor from Hell novel #2

Synopsis

Zoe is used to taking care of herself and has long ago accepted that if anything bad was going to happen, it was going to happen to her. So when she loses her job over something most bosses would probably be happy with and her life starts going down hill from there she doesn't expect it to get any better. She certainly didn't expect any help from the loud jerk next door, but then again she has nothing to lose so puts her trust in him and hopes for the best. What she didn't expect was the once in a lifetime opportunity that he offers her through an arrangement where they both benefit and no one is supposed to get hurt, but she should have known better because her luck has never been that good.

Like most Bradfords, Trevor has a soft spot for food, but that's about all. He leads a pretty straightforward life and likes to keep things simple and that includes his relationships. He wants the perfect woman and knows exactly what she'll be like. So when he discovers much to his horror that he's thinking about his frumpy little neighbor he decides the best way to get his head straight is by working her out of his system. He'll keep her around, but only until he finds perfection.

Review

*sigh* This is my second Mathewson and again, and, like the first, it starts off strong and then ends up disappointing me. Granted, Perfection didn't disappoint me as much as Playing for Keeps did.

*SPOILERS AHEAD*

So - I loved Zoe and Trevor and I loved them so much more than Haley and Jason from Playing for Keeps. Perhaps I was a little biased because Zoe is a big girl and so am I *grins*. Aside from that, however, I enjoyed the sarcastic humor between her and Trevor, the running joke that the Bradford men eat A LOT (like, seriously, I hope no one really eats like that), and I felt that Zoe's weight loss was treated very well. Zoe cuts her calories way too much and Trevor is worried about her. She gets yelled at by her boss because of this and Trevor makes her eat and tells her that she doesn't have to starve herself to lose weight. Because of this, Zoe gains some healthy weight back and Trevor finds that he likes her with her natural curves. I believe this was treated very nicely and better than the alternative that I usually see of the protagonist losing the weight and staying a stick. As a
sidetone - this is why I detest the cover of this ebook. The woman on the cover should have some more weight to her - more curves.

The disappointing part of this book was that, of course, we have an unexpected pregnancy and a sudden proposal. It didn't annoy me as much as it did in Playing for Keeps mostly because I wanted Zoe to have a family of her own. I just don't know why I need to read about pregnancies and proposals in stories I would otherwise really like.

Oh! Haley and Jason are in this story and I rather enjoyed them being there. Perfection, however, made me realize that Jason was REALLY annoying toward the end of Playing for Keeps. He was much more like the original Jason in Perfection.

I will probably read more of Mathewson's books, but I'm pretty much expecting to love the story and then slowly start to dislike it.

Playing for Keeps
A Neighbor from Hell novel
by R.L. Mathewson

Synopsis

Done with being the world's biggest pushover, Haley decides that things are going to change starting with the aggravating neighbor who has too much charm and not enough restraint. What she didn't expect was to be sucked into his world, but Haley has a game plan and she won't let herself forget just what the bad boy next door is capable of.

The last thing Jason expected was for his little shy neighbor to go Rambo on him over some ruined flowers. After he decides to take her under his wing he can't help but notice that she fits very nicely in his life. Now the only thing left is to convince her that this is anything but a game.

Review
This review contains spoilers because I cannot help myself this time.

*sigh* When I first started this book, I wanted to give it 4 or 5 stars. I really liked Haley and Jason. They're so funny and their friendship was the best. I love how they came together - how it happened so naturally. I wanted to be friends with these characters. And then came the conflict.

Hey - I like conflict! Can't have story without some conflict. But I get tired of the same conflict being flipped around from one character to the other. It gets tiring really fast and feels lazy. I get bored. I don't like characters who flip flop so much, nor when they keep hurting each other - and eventually that's what ended up happening here. Oh! And I really HATED that Jason kept referring to Haley as his "little grasshopper." Once is fine. Twice, okay. BUT HE KEPT SAYING IT AND IT'S SO ANNOYING.

*GROAN*

And don't get me started on sudden proposals. I don't like them. I find them unnecessary. I do not need a wedding at the end of a romance book to keep me happy. Perhaps that is an unpopular opinion - but it is my opinion nonetheless.

I gave this book three stars on Goodreads because regardless of where the story ended up - the writing was really fun and I really loved Haley and Jason. So much. That is basically what makes me so sad about this review - I wish I could have loved it all the way through.
