Written in Red

by Anne Bishop

Synopsis

No one creates realms like New York Times bestselling author Anne Bishop. Now in a thrilling new fantasy series, enter a world inhabited by the Others, unearthly entities—vampires and shape-shifters among them—who rule the Earth and whose prey are humans.

As a cassandra sangue, or blood prophet, Meg Corbyn can see the future when her skin is cut—a gift that feels more like a curse. Meg’s Controller keeps her enslaved so he can have full access to her visions. But when she escapes, the only safe place Meg can hide is at the Lakeside Courtyard—a business district operated by the Others.

Shape-shifter Simon Wolfgard is reluctant to hire the stranger who inquires about the Human Liaison job. First, he senses she’s keeping a secret, and second, she doesn’t smell like human prey. Yet a stronger instinct propels him to give Meg the job. And when he learns the truth about Meg and that she’s wanted by the government, he’ll have to decide if she’s worth the fight between humans and the Others that will surely follow.

10 Reasons Why You Should Read Written in Red

1. Anne Bishop pretty much rules in creating this world.

2. There are shape-shifting wolves, vampires, crows, and...a little something extra.

3. The "little something extra" owns the coffee place!

4. One of the shape-shifting wolves owns a book store next to the coffee place. A BOOK STORE OWNED BY A WOLF.

5. Meg Corbyn is simultaneously adorable as she is strong. This is one bad-ass woman here folks.

6. There's a wolf puppy and he's also adorable in a more puppy sense of the word.

7. Simon is a wolf and he is grumpy which can be very amusing.

8. There is more than one story/plot line going on here. Who exactly is Meg? What is up with living at the Lakeside Courtyard? Who is after The Others?

9. There is definitely an underlying tone of interest between our two main characters. *eyebrow wiggle*

10. Did I mention Simon, THE SHAPE SHIFTING WOLF, owns a BOOK STORE and it's called HOWLING GOOD READS? You're welcome.

Killer Librarian
by Mary Lou Kirwin

Synopsis

FILE “M” FOR MURDER. . . .

Champion of the mystery section at a small-town Minnesota library, Karen Nash is about to embark on a dream trip to London—a literary tour inspired by every murderous intrigue, wily suspect, and ingenious crime found in the pages of the British mysteries that she devours. But she’s clueless why the love of her mid-life, Dave, would dump her hours before takeoff—until she spies him at the airport with a young honey on his arm! She decides the best revenge (for now) is to get on that plane anyway . . . and entertain schemes for Dave’s untimely demise while crossing the pond.

After touching ground in the hallowed homeland of Christie, Sayers, and Peters, she checks into a cozy B & B run by charming bibliophile Caldwell Perkins. Soon she’s spilling tears in her pint at the corner pub, sharing her heartbreak saga with a stranger. That night, a B & B guest drops out of circulation—permanently. And when Dave and his cutie turn up in London, Karen realizes they are an assassin’s target. With the meticulous attention to detail that makes her a killer librarian, Karen sleuths her way through her own real-life mystery—in which library science meets the art of murder.

Review

I've become enamored with cozy mysteries. I'm quite specific about them though - they must involve books in some way. Killer Librarian has so far been the best cozy mystery (involving books) that I've read. The book concerns Karen Nash, a librarian readying herself for her first trip to London with her boyfriend Dave...except Dave chooses hours before their departure to break up with her.

Much to my happiness, Karen decides to go to London anyway, and stays at the B&B where she had scheduled their stay. There, she meets a variety of characters including Caldwell, the B&B's charming owner, and his other boarders. While she's there, someone is found dead - and that's only the beginning of Kate's problems while in London.

Oh, I loved this book. I fell for the quirky characters and appreciate the care and detail that went into Kate's character. I think it's wonderful that this story was not just a murder mystery, but was also a tale about betrayal, love, and of course, books. I won't tell you whodunit...but if you enjoy some more character depth to your mysteries - give this one a try.

To Katie With Love
by Erica Lucke Dean

Synopsis

Banker Katie James has a serious thing for romance novels. She’d almost rather settle for a fictional boyfriend than risk her heart on a flesh-and-blood man. Besides, the only real guy she’s remotely interested in is her rich, unattainable client, the mysterious Cooper Maxwell.

Looking less like the ultra-conservative man she knows and more like a drop-dead sexy character from one of her books, Cooper crashes Katie’s 29th birthday party. But one too many drinks lands Katie in uncharted territory… Cooper’s bedroom!

Drunk on love, Katie dives headfirst into the relationship only to discover that Cooper is keeping secrets… dangerous ones. As if things couldn’t get worse, her meddling mother makes a surprise visit, digging up a whole new set of problems.

Who would have guessed having an assassin for a boyfriend would be the least of her worries?

Review

I was totally surprised by this book. I feel the need to make that the first thing you read because it is so rare in the romance novel business to be surprised. But - I so was! So - spoilers lie ahead - you've been warned.

When I first started reading the book, I was really confused, but I just went with the flow. It was funny and the protagonist, Katie, is a romance novel lover. When she becomes involved with Cooper, it totally seems like it's too good to be true. Honestly, I was really starting to believe that he was an assassin. He was super mysterious and...well, secretive. But what he ended up being was so much more interesting! I said this review was fun of spoilers, but I can't let this one go - it's too unique. So, just take my word for it. The novel had a great balance of romance, mystery, and intrigue. I mean, I thought he was an assassin!

Death by Diploma

Chalkboard Outlines Book One
by Kelley Kaye

Synopsis

Emma Lovett leaves her philandering husband and crosses the country to begin her teaching career at a high school in Pinewood, Colorado.  There, she meets Leslie Parker, a fellow teacher given to quoting Shakespeare to fit all situations, and the two become fast friends.

Arriving at work early one morning, Emma discovers the body of the school custodian, a man who reminds her of her late father. When the police struggle to find the killer, the ladies decide to help solve the murder. Their efforts lead them to a myriad of suspects: the schizophrenic librarian, the crude football coach, the mysterious social studies teacher, and even Emma’s new love interest.

As Emma Lovett discovers the perils of teaching high school, she and Leslie learn more than they ever wanted to know about the reasons people kill.

Review

I love cozy mysteries and I found this one to be quite a fantastic read! Emma finds out her husband has been cheating on her and decides to leave him (Go Emma!). She then crosses the country and starts working at Thomas Jefferson High School where she gets mixed in with a bit of trouble. The night janitor, who reminds Emma of her father, is found dead by Emma. Along with a co-worker friend, Emma decides to play detective and find out who the killer is.

The story was filled with kooky characters that certainly made this a fun read. I love getting into these hometown mysteries because they offer some warmth along with their mystery. It's what draws me to their plots, and Death by Diploma is no exception. I recommend this book to all mystery lovers and especially to those who want to be introduced to the genre of the cozy mystery. You're gonna love it!

About the Author

Kelley Kaye taught High School English and Drama for twenty years, but her love for storytelling dates back to creating captions for her high school yearbook. Maybe back to the tales she created around her Barbie and Ken — whatever the case, the love’s been around for a long time.

Kelley is married to this amazing man who cooks for her, and they have two funny and wonderful sons. She lives in Southern California.

Holding Court
by K.C. Held

Synopsis

Sixteen-year-old Jules Verity knows exactly what's in store at her new job at castle-turned-dinner-theater Tudor Times. Some extra cash, wearing a fancy-pants dress, and plenty of time to secretly drool over the ever-so-tasty-and completely unavailable-Grayson Chandler. Except that it's not quite what she imagined.
For one, the costume Jules has to wear is awful. Then there's the dead body she finds that just kind of...well, disappears. Oh, and there's the small issue of Jules and her episodes of what her best friend calls "Psychic Tourette's Syndrome"-spontaneous and uncontrollable outbursts of seemingly absurd prophecies.
The only bright side? This whole dead body thing seems to have gotten Grayson's attention. Except that the more Jules investigates, the more she discovers that Grayson's interest might not be as courtly as she thought. In fact, it's starting to look suspicious...

Review

I don't mean it to sound offensive when I say that I was surprised as to how thoroughly I enjoyed this book! I'm not big on stuff having to do with the medieval times...which is something that I actually really want to delve into. Anyway - Jules is this teenage girl who has a very...um, unfortunate talent/gift - she can foretell the future, but only in these Twitter-like nonsense sentences. They sound like riddles to tell you the truth. The unfortunate part is that she cannot seem to control these messages and they turn out to be outbursts in the most horrible of situations - like being face to face with her crush Grayson.

I was enjoying the story with just those tidbits, when all of a sudden - a mystery! Jules clumsily finds herself in a hidden passageway in the castle. That's fun and all, but what she sees there isn't - the body of a dead girl! She finds her way out only to collide with Grayson. When the king of the castle (literally) goes in to check - no body is to be found. Just who is behind this? Or was Jules having some type of hallucination? Hmmm...

This book turned out to be so wonderfully different than other young adult books - the mystery twist is what did it! I was expecting a romance but got so much more. I recommend this lovely read to anyone who enjoys young adult and mysteries!
