I wasn't sure what to expect when I started reading Nikhil Prabala's The Duchess of Kokora. It definitely sounded like a book I would enjoy, but it looked like it was going to fall more in the fantasy genre, which I'm not well acquainted with. Regardless, I picked it up, and I am so glad I did! What I found was a lovely book that was full of humor, detailed (but not overwhelming) aworld-building, and a story rich in culture.
Phera is a gorgeous character - so intelligent and flawed. This is my favorite kind of character. Ones that are front and center, strong and determined, but full of heart and human. I found Phera to be a well-rounded character. She was definitely a MFC that I cound myself rooting for and enjoying. I'll be honest, I was a bit worried that a lesbian/sapphic character was being written by a man, but I found that Prabala did a fine job in creating a beautiful character.
All in all, this is a fantastic book to pick up if you are interested in young adult fantasy romance, and the tug and pull of court politics. I definitely enjoyed it!
