I find myself back and immersed in Teddy Jones' writing by the way of Making It Home. If you're curious about what I have read by Jones in the past, take a look here to my review of Slanted Light. It was so impressive and daunting to be back in her writing world because the writing is always catching and heavy (in a good way) with emotions.

Making it Home is the newest addition to Jones' the Jackson's Pond series, but any reader can enjoy this volume as a stand alone. Would I recommend to read the other two for a foundation to the series? Of course! But if you happen to find the opportunity to pick this one up, feel free to do so without having read the others. Jones does a wonderful job of providing enough backstory when necessary in order to be fully present in this story.

There is a profound amount of representation in this book. We encounter characters of different races, backgrounds, and, one that I find is most notably excluded usually - ages. Jones does what she does best with these characters - she invites the readers into these characters' lives as they were living, breathing beings.

I feel that Jones reaches another level (is that possible??) with her writing because what we have in Making It Home is a story of racism and intolerance. It is very much mirroring current history, and I appreciate  the decision to write about such difficult topics. It can't be easy to make such a heavy subject matter into a complete and compelling novel. It was a great decision, however, because fiction that reflects "real life" should cause a stir in our emotions just as the real world things do as well (I hope!).

All in all, in reading Jones' Making It Home, you will encounter a story that will make you think and feel. If that is something you are ready for, please take some time to pick up this book!

Teddy Jones is the author of three published novels, Halfwide, Jackson’s Pond, Texas, and Well Tended, as well as a collection of short stories, Nowhere Near. Her short fiction received the Gold Medal First Prize in the Faulkner-Wisdom competition in 2015. Jackson’s Pond, Texas was a finalist for the 2014 Willa Award in contemporary fiction from Women Writing the West. Her as yet unpublished novel, Making It Home, was a finalist in the Faulkner-Wisdom competition in 2017 and A Good Family was named finalist in that contest in 2018.

Although her fiction tends to be set in West Texas, her characters’ lives embody issues not bounded by geography of any particular region. Families and loners; communities in flux; people struggling, others successful; some folks satisfied in solitude and others yearning for connection populate her work. And they all have in common that they are more human than otherwise.

Jones grew up in a small Texas town, Iowa Park. Earlier she worked as a nurse, a nurse educator, a nursing college administrator, and as a nurse practitioner in Texas, Colorado, and New Mexico. For the past twenty years, she and her husband have lived in the rural West Texas Panhandle where he farms and she writes.

The Nature of Small Birds is an intricate story containing three different time periods and each with multiple narrators. The story of Linda and Bruce adopting their baby from Vietnam after their experience protesting the war was truly a tale to behold. There was a lot to absorb from this tale. It ran the gamut of what it means to be family, the process of adoption, what it is to parent, and personal identity.

The author, Susie Finkbeiner, saved space for the reader to feel the vulnerability and emotions of the story and its characters. This was important because there are many emotions that flooded my senses as I read this book. Simply the effects of war themselves were enough to stay in my mind for awhile. It's an time that I continue to learn about and it never fails to stay with me. And Finkbeiner does such a fantastic job in weaving authenticity throughout this story - so much so that it can almost easily be confused with being a true story.

While I enjoyed the multiple POVs, I do wish we could have also had Minh's POV in order to further experience the story from each experience and angle. I think it would have added even more richness to the story especially because adoption is at the center of it.

I recommend this book to any reader who enjoys stories of family dynamics - it is definitely worth the read.

Let me start off by saying, you do not need to read the first three books in the Hot in Magnolia series by Minette Lauren in order to understand and enjoy Gingerbread Kisses. However, I do HIGHLY RECOMMEND that you do because that’s basically what I want to do right now after reading this fantastic book!

If you’re new to my reviews, let me say HI. I LOVE ROMANCE NOVELS. Sometimes I’m rather picky with the ones I read, and sometimes I leave myself open for what may. Sadly, sometimes the latter comes out with less than desired results. But happily - that wasn’t the case with Gingerbread Kisses!

This lovely book had so many aspects that I loved. It was steamy and swoon-worthy! I absolutely love when a romance story can give me the happy feelings. One would think that the focus of this story would be purely on Ginger and Roland, but there was a great mix of also having some focus on Noah and Lexie. Like a lot of readers who did not start with the earlier books of this series, I didn’t realize that Noah and Lexie had their beginning in a previous book at first. However, Lauren does a wonderful job in roping in their story with the present meaning that I didn’t feel slighted in the least when it came to their bits in the story. I definitely want to know more though, so I plan to revisit them when I am able to read the rest of the books in this series.

I enjoyed the background of this story - the small town setting juxtaposed with Ginger’s “big time” problem made for a fun and entertaining story. There’s honestly nothing I love more in my romance books than a great combination of quirky characters, angst-lite drama, and just a great deal of chemistry between the characters. I am such a character-driven reader and Gingerbread Kisses gave me that and so much more with it’s small town feel. There is a perfect balance for me in this book, and I recommend it to all readers who love romance stories with quirky and lovable characters.

Review: To the Republic

An Amazon #1 New Release in History of U.S. Immigration

PURCHASE: Amazon  Author Website

To the Republic is definitely a read that demands your attention. Bruce Clavey takes through truly a saga (the tag line does not lie folks) of heavy topics. This novel weaves in many recent hot topics into its web. Clavey touches upon politics that are particular to Texas, the drug cartels, and  immigration. Whereas one can see all of these topics being important to the nation as a whole, we can definitely say that they are especially important to a border state like Texas. Clavey does not shy away from providing a thorough and detailed description of these topics in his book. To be all honest with you, it felt a bit heavy to take in the information, so I had to make sure to give myself to absorb this book. This may be because I live IN Texas of course.

So, as I mentioned before, this novel is quite detailed and I very much appreciated the care that when into creating this book. Any reader should be able to tell how much work went into this novel...because it shows! One, if this book sounds interesting to you, make sure you take your time to take it all in. Two, it will definitely leave you waiting for book two in the series! I say this because To the Republic definitely left me wanting more.
