Lucifer & the Indigo Kids
by Lord Ra Krishna El

Synopsis

This "new age" book of poetry reflects the diverse views and philosophies of it's author Lord Ra Krishna EL. It's an intimate, humorous and thought provoking group of poems intended to evoke strong emotion. To quote the german philosopher, Friedrich Nietzsche, this style of poetry can be called "Zukunfts poesie" which translates into "Poetry of the future", where truly original ideas are presented thru poetry.

It's subjects include society, pop culture, religious dogma, God and the new age of Aquarius. This book was written and published during the false incarceration of its author in Chicago's notorious Cook County Jail.

Review

I should start off with warning the reader that I do not usually read poetry. I don't hate it - there is some poetry I've liked, but it is not the first thing that I pick up. With that said, this was a truly unique piece of work and I was happy to have been given the chance to review it. The author reveals his thoughts behind personal, societal, and cultural issues through his poetry. It is both intimidating, and welcoming with the author writing the truths he knows. I'd recommend this collection to anyone interested in poetry or interested in the hard-hitting truth of life and personal philosophies.

Ofrenda: A Zine Anthology (1994-2014)
by Celia Perez

Publisher: Sweet Candy Press

Synopsis
Collected from twenty years of zines, Ofrenda is the work of Chicago-based librarian Celia C. Perez. Cultural identity, loss, book love, and music nostalgia are just a few of places this books goes to.Collected zines include issues of I Dreamed I Was Assertive, Roots and Wings, Hickey Underworld, Sherman Sez (a Sherman Alexie fanzine), and many others.“open the pages of this anthology and discover all the ordinary, mundane things that make one person’s existence so extraordinary.“ -Bitch Media

Review
I jumped at the chance to review this zine anthology as I have been a fan of Celia's I Dreamed I Was Assertive zine (plus - we share a name which is pretty awesome). I am so happy to have a collection of her work - so real and honest and immersed in nostalgia and beauty. In it are memories childhood and adulthood that are very much hers. It is a perspective only Celia herself could give us, not just because she is a person of color, but because it shows her individuality. That is what I love so much about zines - it is a point of view that the reader wouldn't get anywhere else because it is truth. There is no sugar coating and fiction, there is only the human experience. I truly recommend this collection and to check out anything Celia may create in the future as I am sure that we will only be left wanting more.

About the Author
Celia C. Pérez was born in Judy Blume’s hometown to a father from Cuba and a mother from Mexico. When she was fourteen, she was certain her future was in professional wrestling. Instead, she grew up to be a librarian and a writer. She is working on a middle grade novel. While she has listened to many versions of “La Bamba,” her favorite is still the one by Los Lobos. She lives in Chicago.
