The Billionaire's Intern
by Crystal Kaswell

Synopsis

She needs this job. He needs her tied to his bed and screaming his name.

Lizzy Wilder is desperate to stay in New York City with her sister Kat, the one person she trusts. Lizzy's only hope is a programming internship at hot tech startup Odyssey. But there's a problem: the company's CEO is enigmatic billionaire Nick Marlowe--the impossibly sexy one night stand she never expected to see again.

Nick stays in control of his life. He doesn't f*** interns. Period. If Lizzy wants to work at Odyssey, she needs to keep things platonic.

She tries. Hard. But the connection they shared, the way he captivated her-- there's no way her body or her heart will allow her to forget him. There's no way she can work under him without working under him.

Can she risk the job she needs for the man she wants? And can she really handle being under his control if he wants her too?

Review

I usually really love billionaire boss novels, but this book was pretty flat in my opinion. It was missing some aspects that I enjoy, like alternating points of view between the male and female protagonists. I love love LOVE reading the man's POV...and all I got here was the woman's POV...and it was a whiny one at that. Lizzy is annoying...so annoying and a stalker! And she's 19 years old! There is way too much dirty talk between this TEENAGER and a "grown" man for my liking. I usually don't get all judge-y like this...but Lizzy is whiny and annoying like a stereotypical teenager. I totally believe that a 19 year old can be mature - Lizzy is totally not that. Also, too many people using the term "eye-fuck" - that term is NOT a common one. And every time Nick opens his mouth...he sounds like an asshole. It was way too close to "Grey" territory than I would like. Ew.

Ultimately, I could not finish the book. It was too much whining...not enough romance for me.

**I also do not know why the cover is different than what NetGalley posted is the title....

Blest
by Blaise Lucey

Synopsis

Growing up in a small suburb of St. Louis, sixteen-year-old Jim Blest has always known that he’s different. But he never thought he’d find someone else like him until the beautiful and mysterious Claire Morgan moves to town. When they kiss for the first time, the force of it is earth-shattering—literally. And then everything Jim has ever known suddenly changes.

As it turns out, Claire isn’t like him. He is an angel, and she’s a demon.

At a school where ancient enemies live among humans in a wary truce, Jim and Claire fight to be together against impossible odds. But a timeless war looms on the horizon, and they stand on opposing sides . . .

From debut author Blaise Lucey comes a breathtaking and action-packed story of heartache, sacrifice, and forbidden love.

Review

This is a head-scratcher. This review will involve spoilers, btw.

I was really happy to read a book about angels. That's probably something I hardly read about. And to read about demons too...that was nice! You know what I mean...

The head-scratching is because I enjoyed parts of this book, but others left me...confused. The mythology, main characters, the way the angels are introduced are awesome. The main thing I didn't like was the fact that Claire and Jim fell into instalove. I feel that there was hardly a base of love between the two of them to account for so much sacrifice and, well, evil in this story. There is understanding that happens between them, but love? I wasn't convinced of it. And since this story is based on that, well, it left a bad taste in my mouth. I felt like we didn't get to learn about other characters which made me not care about them.  Sad, but true.

I'm still going to recommend this book because I read it to the very end wanting to know what happened. I can't guarantee that I will pick up the next in the series (it ends on a cliff hanger-ish scene), but I can say that I honestly enjoyed the mythology and world-building that was started in this book.

She's sexy, she's funny and she haunts his dreams. Memories of that one night keep him awake and he's dying for another taste of her.But Jaynie doesn't seem at all interested. What's a man to do?

Review

*squirms uncomfortably* I don't like leaving negative reviews and I hardly do, since I'm a fairly good judge of what I am going to enjoy reading. But it does happen sometimes, where I don't like a story/book.

Okay - so - there will be spoilers, but not for much as I did not finish this book, readers. *stares at screen, ready for the BOOs*

I know I know - hear me out. I just couldn't find the want in me to finish this book. I will provide you with my opinion with the first 50% of the book, which is what I read.

Jaynie walks in on her scumbag of a fiance having a menage a trois with another woman and a friend of his. He basically makes her feel bad for not being a "feminine girl" and this pretty much (and understandably so) shatters her confidence. I mean, her FIANCE said this to her - yeah, I don't blame her for that punch in the gut.

Jaynie turns to her friend who lets her stay in her and her brother's home. Said brother, Brian, is of course a handsome guy that happens to be Jaynie's boss/co worker. Since she had her confidence blown to bits and feeling a bit less than girly, Jaynie asks Brian for a one night stand - no strings attached. They have a pretty sexy night and after that Brian can't seem to stop thinking about her.

Now - up to this point, I'm a little bored with the story. I've read sad romance stories before, but this one was just...BLEAK. I don't know if it was because the thought of Jaynie's womanhood/femininity was based solely on her fiance or if it's because there is almost no insight into Jaynie and Brian's relationship BEFORE the one night stand. I mean - they worked together...wouldn't they have something to talk about, to fall back on?

Anyway, I was still with the story until the second sexual encounter. It included anal sex. The anal sex is not what turned me off of the story. Brian does ask her if it's okay, and she does give consent. BUT at one point, she says, "Brian, stop it...please. Oh shit, it hurts." I hate to get all XXX rated with you all, but I'm not being gratuitous. When I hear STOP IT, I hear STOP and NO. It's the way I am - it's the way I understand things. So, when Jaynie says this, I WANTED HIM TO STOP.

But he didn't.

I don't care that her body kept egging him on - I care about what she said. And it would have been just fine if Brian would have just stopped and, hey, maybe they try again later since now she knows how it feels.

That part just really turned me off and I saw Brian as this guy that was just after the sex and his physical satisfaction. This isn't want I look for in a romance or love story. My opinion may not be your opinion, and that is just fine. We are all entitled to like what we like - I just didn't particularly like this.

The Last Girl
Dominion Trilogy Book 1
by Joe Hart

Synopsis

A mysterious worldwide epidemic reduces the birthrate of female infants from 50 percent to less than 1 percent. Medical science and governments around the world scramble in an effort to solve the problem, but twenty-five years later there is no cure, and an entire generation grows up with a population of fewer than a thousand women.

Zoey and some of the surviving young women are housed in a scientific research compound dedicated to determining the cause. For two decades, she’s been isolated from her family, treated as a test subject, and locked away—told only that the virus has wiped out the rest of the world’s population.

Captivity is the only life Zoey has ever known, and escaping her heavily armed captors is no easy task, but she’s determined to leave before she is subjected to the next round of tests…a program that no other woman has ever returned from. Even if she’s successful, Zoey has no idea what she’ll encounter in the strange new world beyond the facility’s walls. Winning her freedom will take brutality she never imagined she possessed, as well as all her strength and cunning—but Zoey is ready for war.

Review

I'm rather on the fence about this one, readers. On one hand, it was an interesting concept that centered around the reduction of female infant births - very sci fi. However, it is definitely a slow read that did not fully satisfy me with its characters. There were some twists and it did have me interested, but I did not feel compelled to keep going with the story.

I should also mention that I am a little biased in that I don't like many dystopian books. I have to truly care about the characters in order to really enjoy a dystopian novel.

I need to also make it a point to say that one of the major reasons I could not enjoy this story is because it confused me. In a world where women/girls are  surviving less and less - why would those who do survive be treated harshly? Should they not be treated like a nearly extinct species? And, granted, this story is not realistic - but in dystopian stories it should feel like it COULD be real - and I just didn't get that from this read.

Kidnapped by the Billionaire

by Jackie Ashenden

Synopsis

Get lost in the deeply passionate, darkly sensual new novel from Jackie Ashenden, Kidnapped by the Billionaire.

He kissed her the way he’d run her down, conquering her, taking her…

A priceless plan. An illicit attraction.
Seven years ago, billionaire-turned-bodyguard Elijah Hunt lost everything he had―his family, his future―and now he wants revenge. But when he decides to kidnap the daughter of the man who ruined his life, Elijah gets a lot more than he bargained for. Violet Fitzgerald is nothing like her corrupt wealthy father. In fact, she’s so disarmingly independent―and irresistible―that she just might be dangerous…

And a love that’s too good to be true.
Violet never thought she’d feel a connection to her captor. But there’s something beneath Elijah’s steel-bodied exterior that makes her want to know him more deeply…and surrender to his every demand. But once Elijah’s erotic fantasies become a reality―and he and Violet develop a real romantic connection―he finds himself in a quandary: Is he still the one in control? Or has Violet imprisoned him―body and soul?

Review

Well. Hm. I don't know how I feel about this book. This is going to be a semi spoiler review. I won't giveaway the end or anything...but I have some things to say. You've been warned.

The writing was great - wonderfully detailed between the chemistry between characters, even down to what they're wearing. I had a clear picture in my mind of what was going on throughout the whole story - it was very easy to fall into.

And there is no doubt about it - the chemistry between Violet and Elijah is crackling and hot. Seriously. But then I think about the other things...like the fact that Violet was a virgin before Elijah and Elijah had all the intention to use Violet as bait to someone. Not just any someone...but someone Elijah hates...and he has no idea why he (Jericho) wants Violet. These and other things just made me really think about how I felt about this story. It is not just some love story where the two characters hate each other and then love each other... It's more complicated than that. It just seemed odd to me that Violet would fall for her captor...which is funny because that has happened (Stockholm Syndrome anyone?). Plus, I was able to rationalize it enough because Violet and Elijah were not complete strangers...they did know each other.

I also found myself being bored with the Honor and Gabe sections. Maybe this book is part of a series? I'm not entirely sure. Those sections are quite detailed, but I was mainly interested in what was happening between Violet and Elijah.

All in all, however, even though I was able to rationalize it enough to get through the story...I never stopped feeling uneasy about what was actually happening in the story. But, reader, that is just me - maybe this is just your kind of read.
