Advanced Physical Chemistry
by Susannah Nix

Synopsis

After four lousy boyfriends in a row, chemical engineer Penny Popplestone swears off men until she can figure out why they keep cheating on her. But her no-men resolution hits a snag when the mysterious and superhumanly hot barista at her favorite coffee shop strikes up a friendship with her.

Penny strives to keep things platonic, but when Caleb gives her the kiss of her life, she realizes he wants to be more than just friends. Tired of always being “good little Penny,” she throws caution to the wind and pursues a no-strings fling with the hottie barista. It’s not like they have anything in common beyond scorching physical chemistry, so what does she have to lose?

Only her heart.

Now, this fanfic-reading, plus-size heroine faces an unsolvable problem. What do you do when being apart is unbearable…but being together is impossible?

Advanced Physical Chemistry is the third in a series of standalone rom-coms featuring geeky heroines who work in STEM fields.

Review

Susannah Nix has this knack for writing intelligent, unique women. I've enjoyed each of her books in this series, but I do believe that Advanced Physical Chemistry is my favorite so far!

We meet Penny, a curvy, crafty, and intelligent woman who is tired of being cheated on by her boyfriends. She decides that maybe she's been too nice...and too much of a doormat. This, plus some other occurrences encourages her to proposition the attractive, but really quiet barista at her favorite cafe after he's shown some interest. The kicker? Having a purely physical relationship is better said than done for Penny.

I loved that Penny did not change herself in this book. She did the things she enjoys, such as knitting, volunteering, baking, etc. The only thing she really did was open herself up to new experiences. She was already a strong woman, but she showed some bravery in going after what she wanted and not really thinking about what people would think. She didn't fall apart - didn't seek revenge either. Penny was simply just Penny. Also? She has great friends, and was not portrayed how curvy, plus sized women are usually portrayed. Meaning, that instead of reading about her scarfing down donuts, I read about Penny taking care of herself and realizing that a size 16 is where her body seemed to naturally want to be. Wow. I have never heard that described. I found it quite motivating actually.

Now Caleb. I really do love Caleb even though it was infuriating that he wouldn't talk sometimes! I am a huge sucker for dual perspectives in romance novels, and that is something APC does not give you. HOWEVER, if you're like me and enjoy this....well, you won't be completely without Caleb's perspective *nudge*nudge*wink*wink*

I definitely recommend this book for romantic comedy lovers, but also for anyone who is ready to read about a woman who doesn't even consider changing herself for the possibility of love. This story is all about being who you are, loving who you are, being loved for who you are, and being brave. Who wouldn't want to read about that???

The Wingman
by Natasha Anders

Synopsis

She was supposed to be his one-night distraction. But their attraction is undeniable.

Introverted Daisy McGregor is used to being a wallflower, but what she lacks in style, she makes up for with an acerbic wit, a passion for life, and a deep devotion to her family. So she’ll suffer through her sister Dahlia’s bachelorette party and accept the cloud of pity for going stag to the wedding.

Out at the pub, sexy bad boy Mason Carlisle is a reluctant wingman tasked with entertaining Daisy while his brother flirts with her oldest sister, Daffodil. When the plan fails and Mason’s true intent is revealed, he feels intense guilt—and a sensual spark of desire for the unlikeliest of women.

Daisy decides to use this unfortunate encounter to her advantage: to make it up to her, Mason will be another kind of wingman, playing the role of her boyfriend and wedding date. Will their ruse unravel completely—or will Mason and Daisy’s undeniable attraction ignite a scorching love affair that knows no rules?

Review

Every once in awhile I come across a romance novel that I am unable to put down...that I MUST consume as quickly as possible. The Wingman is definitely one of these reads for me.

Mason is asked by his brother Spence to keep Daisy, the other McGregor sister, busy while Spence talks to her older sister Daffodil. Mason doesn't feel the best about this situation, but feels bad enough for Spence and his broken relationship to agree with the situation. Little does Mason realize that meeting Daisy is definitely going to be a memorable experience.

I am constantly on the look out for romance novels where the heroine is plus-sized, nerdy, geeky. or just different. As a plus-sized woman, I like to read about a character I can relate to sometimes. Daisy certainly has her insecurities, but she is also unabashedly herself. And that, is wonderful.

This novel has everything I love: plus-sized and smart heroine, alpha hero who isn't (entirely) afraid of showing that he cares, dogs(!), and a conflict that is a bit more complex without it coming off as a scene from a telenovela (soap opera). Both Mason and Daisy learn quite a bit about each other, and I felt included in their "relationship" without feeling that it was dragging on. Each scene portrayed had a purpose, and I love love love the dual points of view. I loved reading Daisy's thoughts as much as I loved reading Mason's.

This novel made me cringe, laugh, sigh, and swoon. It made my heart break, and it gingerly pieced it back together. I definitely recommend this book to any romance reader in the mood for a steamy sweet romance. I will also make sure to check out Natasha Anders's other reads as well!

Review: Cinderella and the Geek

Cinderella and the Geek
by Christina Phillips

Synopsis

From Christina Phillips a sexy, new romance with a hero you won’t forget…

I'm not looking for love or a Happily-Ever-After because I know how that ends. I just need to concentrate on my degree and look after myself. But there's something about my boss, Harry, I can't resist. It's crazy since he's so hot and smart it should be illegal.

And then, just like Cinderella, I have my night at the ball and a midnight kiss, and for a week all my sexy daydreams come true. That fake date changes my life in a way I could never imagine. It turns out, Harry wants me too.

But I’m off to pursue my dreams, and he’s taking his business to the next level. There’s no way this fairytale has a happy ending, but that doesn’t keep me from wishing for it.

Review

In this loose re-telling of Cinderella, Alice works behind the desk at a tech job which is co-owned by Harry. Harry also happens to be the guy Alice has been lusting after since the interview. Told from dual perspectives, we come to learn that Alice and Harry are mutually attracted to each other, and they also each have scars from their past that could dictate their future.

The attraction between Alice and Harry is truly one of the sweetest things. And I love the dual perspective the reader gets because we're able to see how each of the characters' pasts has really developed them into who they are, and who they can become - for better or worse. Usually the speediness of this relationship would upset me, but these two have known each other for a while, and it plays off really well when they get together.

I found the conflict between them to be petty, and frustrating at times. However, because I really liked each of the characters, I found that I was able to hold on until that pettiness dissipated.

This was a 3 star read for me - sweet and entertaining, but still missing that something that would make it a re-read for me.

This ghost’s wrath spares no one—not Gethsemane’s students, Inspector Niall O’Reilly, fellow teacher Frankie Grennan, or a group of ghost hunters descended on Dunmullach to capture proof ghosts exist. Proof Gethsemane has to quash to keep Eamon, her resident ghost and friend, from becoming an internet sensation. But dating can be deadly, and after another coed turns up dead—she and the Page Turners, her book-club turned amateur sleuths, go on the hunt for the murderer. Except things never go as planned when the Page Turners get involved, and suddenly they find themselves with pink and blue colored hair, dressed as bikers, and making friends with a large tattooed man named Snake when they go undercover in a dive bar.
